Need help ASAP

My giraffe nosed catfish is acting weird. His top fin is staying down and he's kind of hovering off the bottom, normally he stays on the bottom. He also has a pinkish abrasion or something on his mouth. Please help. Ammonia is .25 (just fed), nitrite 0 nitrate 20-40ppm. He's also not eating which has never happened.

I would go ahead and start a WC. I wouldn't think you would show nitrates that quickly, but then again, I've never measured.

Forgot to mention tank is running for 8 months, 2 50% wc's/ week, sometimes 1 60%. Doing one now like you said. That white spot on his mouth is bothering me and all other fish seem normal

NO3 is a bit high, bear in mind it is not possible to be measured correctly:

... but if your nitrates have always been like that and the fish was fine, then it makes it an unlikely reason.

-- How long have you had him?
-- What changed? Tank, stock, diet, plants, temp, water conditioner? Something must have changed.
-- Are his tank mates all ok?

I've had him 4 months. The tank is a bit overstocked but i also skipped my wc on Sunday, nitrates normally aren't that high. The only thing that changed was I stopped feeding massivore 2 or 3 weeks ago and now i'm feeding nls pellets soaked with garlic.

I just did a 80% wc and he seems to be more active already. Lesson learned, never skip a wc.

Hope he is doing better! That guy is sweet. If you could figure out what the abrasion on his nose is I actually have like 15 different types of medicine I took home from work if you need them!
