Need help designing the best sump for my needs. Experience wanted :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fill the sump half way and run the pump. Note the water level. Turn the pump off note that level. Keep adding water to the sump and noting the water level as you go. I leave a couple of inches beyond the final level in the sump just to be safe. Also note the water level on the tank when the pump os off. That will be the level you'll fill the tank back up to when doing wc's

I guess I just assumed you needed baffled to do the sump design I wanted. For flow to pass through the different media and such.

How do I determine hot much empty / available is needed for extra water in case of power outage and before the siphoned dies out?

How much space is needed between the bottom glass panel and the baffle? How wide should the flow channel be?

Can I see a picture of your baffles design? What are the draw backs or using or not using baffles?
sure, no draw backs as far as i can tell except for how quiet it is :p. im not home atm but here are some pictures of it on my phone. its not complete because i have to attach another sump to it.

OP --

Read this guy's build thread. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/300-gallon-sa-ce-community-build-thread.423425/

If you want the tank to be quiet, you may want to consider drilling the tank and running a Herbie or Beanimal overflow. Or perhaps a Durso at least. I've never run an HOB overflow, don't know how quiet they are, but I can tell you a Herbie overflow on a drilled tank is quiet enough for me to talk on speaker phone in my office right next to it.

I think all this is a lot of effort to filter a 75 gallon tank, but you sound pretty intent on building a sump. If you want to learn about sumps, then definitely build one. Sumps sound really complicated because you kinda have to see one to "get it"--they're very hard to describe in writing, so all written explanations are overly complex. But, once you actually see one in operation, or build one, think about how it works, a sump is the simplest thing in the world.

If you just want better filtration, then buy a MUCH bigger canister. I put an Eheim 2262 on a 125 replacing a pair 2217's, it made a big difference.

Whats the first chamber for cant understand the writing ?

Seems like you could just do away with all of the baffles move the socks to the far left and bag up all the bio media place it near the pump.

If you want to use foam along with the socks you can buy sheets of poret foam and cut th the length of the tank making foam walls but the socks shoul be all you need for mech

I did the same stuff....wanting to put baffles until other members explained why baffles are and arent needed. Happy i listened

Well the idea is to reduce maintenance on the socks as much as possible by having pre mechanical filtration.

I hear ya but then the pre mechanical still needs to be maintained. Might be easier to just make a foam wall but changing socks out is allot easier than cleaning out foam pads.

If you really want to use foam/baffles maybe just swap the filter sock compartment to the first where the drains are. The way you have it i would think allot of the water would bypass the socks.
