So a couple of weeks ago I bought tis little guy from Nautlius (a supplier in Florida) I was told that it was a farm bred "True Gator Gar" from them. What do you think? It's only like 2"-2.5". Thanks!!

A florida gar.

It looks a spotted gar to me.

It's tough to tell at this size sometimes, but seeing he bought it from a supplier in Florida basically confirms fl gar to me.

yup, Florida gar. the pseudo-locality info supports this, but given the look of the fish i'd say Florida as opposed to spotted either way.

i really wish suppliers would get it straight what an actual alligator gar is...then again, if it keeps the wrong people from purchasing gator gars, then i suppose there is some benefit to the usual frustrating LFS/supplier's ignorance/lack of ability to ID gars--

The funniest part to me (and this is not directed to the OP at all) is when people say they bought something labeled as gator gars and then are vastly relieved when we tell them it is a florida gar. Why buy the gator gar at all if you aren't going to be prepared for it?

Oh well...

Thanks for all the input. I was really hoping it was a gator gar. I was totally prepared for it, for a while at least. Thanks again!!

im sorry to have to point this out, but if you can't tell the difference between a gator & a florida gar, then how can you be totally prepared for the former?

i think a lot of the time they buy the "gator", then do research and find out what a massive responsibility it is, and then are finally relieved when they find out it's the much more managable florida gar...

yes, and a bit more research will indicate that all gar species are illegal in the state of Washington (i'm not happy about that, as i was born there; g/f and i were actually looking into jobs out there post-grad...you can bet i was going to be keeping the gars under sci-permit for sure!). either way, just pointing out that fact. --
