Need help on a small low tech tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pyramid,

First off all - 3Gallon and as long it's not by a door or window and it doesn't get cold in your house your 3G tank will be fine without a heater, saying that I would atleast like someone said stick a Temp sticker on the outside - Digital temp isn't really needed you would end up spending more on the temp then the tank itself.

Sponge filter should be fine

Lighting you can pick up any clamp on reading light and depending on the bulb size it should do the trick fine, if it doesn't go try something else. I've found that the best thing about the fish hobby is expirementing on what works and what you like. Someone could tell you to go buy this light or this plant and they might not work with your setup. Suggestions are great but shouldn't be taken to heart and you shouldn't be 100% set on peoples opinions because like I said it might work for that person but not you. Also lighting depends on what kinda of plants you want to grow I've grown "High Light Plants" in under 1 WPG and they've done fine.

Substrate - I'm a firm believer that you don't need expensive Florite or Eco-Complete to have plants or a planted tank. I've used Home Depot Playsand in all my aquariums and have sucessfully grown alot of plants. All plants will taken Nuts from the WC (water column) Root feeders like Swords, Lotus, Vals will be better off with getting there nuts from the substrate because they are all heavy root feeders but will still be fine without them. If you are worried use a 50 cent root tab and place it in the substrate which usually last 4-6 months.

Also the only way to learn is to make mistakes, mistakes are the best to learn from because you sure as hell don't want to make the same mistake again.

Yeah I am going to get a 3G tank and a clamp on light. Im going with only floating plants. I will add a tiny amount of gravel and maybe plant 1 crypt plant. I would really like a "carpet" in the tank but that may be hard to achieve. I have the nutrients and excel. I may try out some root tabs like you suggest.

I think I will also buy a small heater just to be on the safe side. Really its all about the light at this point. I am not familiar with smaller lights on smaller tanks. If I were to buy a clamp-on I would not know if I have low light or high light or any usable light at all.

I would assume you might go with a floating plant like Hornwort or something along those lines - Floating plants are generally very fast growing and I swear will grow in the dark ;) As long as you have some light going in there your plants will stay alive. I would tell you to just expirement with different lights just to see what works. If your only you going to plant a crypt make sure you don't plant it's rhizome. Most people when they plant crypts will attach them to a rock or driftwood. The crypts will get there Nutrients from the WC and are heavy root feeders. Be careful dosing excel as this can cause melting if not properly added and dosed.

You could get the same fixtures from a lowes or a HD...heres a link:

Will these take CFL bulbs? Will these be enough to grow dwarf hairgrass? I plan to use pool filter sand. I will add a few root tabs. Plant dwarf hair grass, one piece of anubias nana "petite" on driftwood and a little bit of floating wisteria. Thats all I wanna grow in my 3 gallon. And should I use the light over open tank water or not? Like if I clamp it on the side of the tank, should I have a cover or not? Thx

Assuming they're close enough, and you used a 150 watt incandescent bulb, they'd likely be enough to gently simmer your 3g tank's contents. :grinno:

I've recently tinkered with them in the store. They have smaller ones rated for ~100 watts with a standard mogul. The one in the link will support 150watts. In terms of most carpets, you're usually talking high tech or high experience tank owners - or a mixture of both.

They're a bit on the thin side in terms of the sheetmetal reflectors, but there's a reason they're cheap.

You can also walk into nearly any store in the country and pick up a 4 pack of 6500k 9-20+ watt cfl spirals for $5-$10. Check the package for the "Equivelant" wattage. Most bulbs will be listed with something to the effect of "23 Watt Equivelant" - when the bulb actually uses 9w or so.

In such a small tank, go low at first. If you don't see growth, and aren't starting an algea farm you can always go to a higher watt rating for a few bucks later on.

Best of luck. ^_^

DHG needs co2...and probably wont grow under complete shade of floaters.

I got excel. I also won't have a complete cover of floaters. Just a tiny bit for my betta to rest on. Maybe like 1/4 of the top with floaters. The whole purpose of the light is for the hairgrass. I know I can grow anubias and wisteria with little/low light. But I figured why not make the tank look nicer with some grass in it.

I got a 10 gallon with dwarf hairgrass and got only low light and adding excel and I am getting runners. And I only had this for a month.
