Need help on finding what freshwater fish to put in my 55 gallon

I'm getting a new 55 gallon in about a week which is going to be freshwater and i want some different kind of fish not just the some old tetras danios guppys mollys and so on you get my point... (i have a 20 gallon with guppys mollys and a dwarf gourami so i dont want those kind of fish in the 55 gallon)

To make it a little more clear to you i was thinking something like an oscar but i did my research and found out i will only be able to put one oscar in a 55 gallon and nothing else so thats a no no

and then i was thinking a cichlid tank but ehhh i dont really want one

Tell me some cool fish that can go together in a 55 or maybe if you have a 55 or bigger tell me what you have in it and i can get some ideas

I'm planning on planting the aquarium but if its better off to just keep fake plants with the fish you guys mention from them being to aggressive or anything else i wont plant it i just want some different fish not just those 2 inch colorful ones i metioned earlier (maybe some eels??)

Medium Bichirs, Pike cichlids, or smaller Plecos (like 9 inches max) are good options

You can have a cihclid tank, but smaller cichlids.

Some small catfish like Bumble bee catfish, some Synodontis species, raphaels etc


Senegal bichir w/ other suitable fish


Oddballs like african butterfly fish, leaf fish



Maybe a puffer


Not all these fish together, jsut giving you an idea.

if i get a Senegal bichir is that going to have to be the only fish in there like an oscar or can i stock it like i normally would?

sen bichir , I always reccomend a pair of gulpers if your filtration could handle them. And as for the bichir being the only one NO! You could get a few. And they are very fun fish I got a few

u could do like 10 figure 8s
or 30 pea puffers

The Bichir will get around 12 inch, you could have other fish, it would be best to get mid/upper swimming fish.

You could get some other bottom fish too w/ it but be careful with selection.

Plecos, catfish, Bichirs and other bottom dwellers will argue if not given enough space/territory.

I dont know about 10 figure 8s in a 55, I can bet they will all fight and only 1 or 2 will remain later.


The pea puffers are a better idea, they dont need any salt either. And you can get away with a group of them, but you would need lots of decor if you dont want deaths.

1 (other kind of pleco that only grows to like 4 inches or less)
2 blue acaras
2 angel fish
3 bolivian rams
4 Apistogramma borellii (the all yellow ones)

1 Senegal bichir

3 Apistogramma borellii

well know that you more or less know what kind of fish i want maybe bring out a list or add some new fish (im not even sure if these are compatible so let me know) in there i really want either some angel fish or senegal bichir.
