Need help setting up a FOWLR

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
cool, so seein the size tank im using and everything, what size bulkhead would you suggest for me?

also, is there a certain type of paint i should use? just spray can?

im guessing that would be a 1.25" hole ill have to get drilled then? the guys where im getting it drilled wont know much about tanks haha, so ill probably have to know this. also, it doesnt really matter if i drill the hole bigger than i need right? say i have 1.5" bulkhead, i could still run a 600 gpm pump

in your drawings i also saw a refugium and wet dry? are you saying i should do both? or what is my best bet?

obviously i dont have the space to do both under my tank aswell

Correct the pump will determine the GPH.

They are two different systems that do different things. They have their pros and cons. If your stocking with large predators i would go wetdry

If your doing a lot of rock work, and peaceful fish, got refugium

Cool thing about refugium is the algaes in the plant section eat nitrates reducing water changes dramatically and doesn't grow algae in the tank

thats neat, my lfs recommended me doing a refugium aswell. I think im going to go the more peaceful community route this time.

Do you know the size of hole i should get drilled? need to know asap before i go tomorrow

thats up to you man. Like you said the size of the drain or hole cut doesn't matter. The pump will determine the flow, but just get the hole cut to bulk heads that are available. Don't cut it a certain size that you can't readily buy parts for. I would go with 1.25 just incase you want more flow.

What is chicken grit #5?? never heard of it. Anything will become live after time even driftwood can become filled with nitrifing bacteria. Aragonite sand is best for long term. I would put a small amount of the chicken grit in a cup and put some vineger in it. if it reacts than its calcium carbonate based. It naturally leaches buffers into the water. I only use Silica sand and pool filter sand in freshwater becouse it doesnt adversly affect your PH. do you know if the chicken grit is safe from pollutants or something that will leach into the water and make it unlivable? Saltwater is never cheap. If you cut corners trying to make it less expensive trust me youll pay in the long run. good luck
