need HELP with cuban cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i got some metro and geltek. they are in a 75g for now. not sure if i used the right dosage but i put 7 spoonfuls in there. i think each spoon was about 100mg. how often should i use it?

I wouldnt use it at all. Id separate them and crank the temp to at least 82 before I did anything else.

Did you read everything in the link I posted above?

There are 2 people (Rapps was one of them) stating the same issues you have and they were related to the stress, nothing else.

If you are gonna use meds then just be sure to read the dosage. the gel tec i use is in dropper form and i use it with feedings. I have haitiensis and beani;both which are prone to bloat. and i do believe that bloat is generally caused by stress. but after i used the meds i havent lost any since. you should read some of the other threads and websites concerning bloat. the gel tec will help cure heximita if they have it plus enhance eating. but i would try cranking up the heat and do water changes for the next few days to a week. if you notice any other problems then repost. but they should be fine.

you can also add some target fish or smaller convicts to help.

im 99.9% its not stress. they are in their own tank. its just 5 of them in a 75g. the smallest is 1" and the biggest maybe 2.5". they were doing good and always ate alot untill i brought home some tinfoil barbs. i think they got some kind of parasites from them. some will taste the food but wont eat it. the others dont even look at it.

These are tetracanthus not haitiensis ole buddy ;)

your fishes poop says 'bloat' to me. got to your lfs and get the powdered capsule medication that treats bloat. if they are in a big tank, isolate them in a 10 gallon

Cubans bloat very easily when they are small. Tips for when they are small... They need a lot of room to swim with no competition when they are small. The smallest amount of stress can cause them to bloat, even competition amongst themselves. They do not do well when handled or moved around, so they are better suited for a long term grow-out tank when small. Keep temp at least 82. Once they make it to 4-4.5", they are pretty much indestructible, and can be taken care of like a midas.

You can try using Epsom salt to clear their tracks. They should start eating within a week. However, even the stress from that may cause you to lose any of them.

After raising a bunch of these guys, I would never recommend buying them under 4". But, they are really slow growing. And with only a few making it that size, these guys can get pretty expensive for any fish over 4".

if they were bloated wouldnt their stomach look full? they look like they are starving. when i come up to their tank they run to the glass and beg for food. once i put food in there they just pick at it. some just look at it but wont taste it. so far i have given them metro. waited 2 days and did a water change today. then i used more epson salt and metro. i have also been soaking flakes with geltek.

Try some Hikari Bio Gold.My fish will eat it when they won't eat anything else.Personally I would just raise the temp a bit and use salt unless You can id the illness for sure.Wrong meds will only stress them worse
