filter get either a small whisper, tetra or aquaclear for a top go to homedepot and get a piece of plexi glass for it you can get the piece for a couple bucks and cut it to suit your needs aga heaters and whisper are good and cheap and whisper air pumps are good and cheap also hope this helps try looking on drfosterandsmith.com and bigalsonline.com they have great deals on stuff hope this helps Nic :)
i like the plexi-glass idea because i already have a 20" strip light that will work. its not going to be a show tank or anything.
does a HOB filter aerate the tank? because i want a pump because they have always worked well for me. btw how thick does the plexi need to be?

Airbubbles are only minimially helpful, surface agitation is how the tank is aerated. That's why I would suggest the largest Aquaclear that fits your budget over a pump and airstones...

how about the one for 19.99 or 27.99 on petsmart.com? and how do i keep guppy fry from being sucked up in the filter?

I have a 110 AC on my 40 with Mating Green Terrors, and from what I can tell no fry have been sucked up in the filter. Not saying it can't or won't happen, I don't have an answer for you, I'm hoping someone might be able to help. One thing i was thinking is you could put some strainer type material over the intake with a urrber band, that might help... For the 20 Gallon you could probably get by with the Aquaclear 50, unless you have enough dough for the 70.....

i can get the AC 70 defintley, i have heard of pantyhose and a rubber band over the intake would that work? even the guppies are small and i dont want them sticking to it either lol. im going to use the little one gallon tank as a fry raising tank because it doesnt have a power filter and it has many plants to make them safe and comfortable. im going to keep the 13 guppies (i counted today lol) and get 3-4 cory cats and 5 zebra danios in the tank would that be ok? or should i just not put any zebra danios at all. btw do you know of any live bearing fish that dont get big?

I just rescued about a dozen and a half feeder guppies from a school project, if i didnt they would have been flushed in the toilet. As of now there in a little 1 gallon i setup for like 10 bucks. It has a UGF and a air pump and a top with light. I was just wondering what kind of bottom feeder i can get that wont get too big and will eat the algae and the food that sunk. I will be upgrading them to a 2 gallon that comes with a mini HOB filter i think.:woot:

Barrow someones baby P-bass.. That'll clear up all your problems:D

i know all about cycling and everything now lol. i didnt take the time to cycle the 1 gallon though because it was needed quickly. i just put water from a reverse osmosis in it.

The plexy just needs to be thick enough to support itself ( if you can afford 1/4 " that would be great, but 1/8" will work just make it larger than the tank all the way around so it can't fall in. You can then cut notches for the filter. Remember if water splashes up on it from the underside it may leak out the edge and down the outside of the tank and make a mess (mostly with air stones)). Put a sponge filter over the intake to stop the young'ns from getting in, and it also works as a pre-filter. Pantyhose would have to have a framework to suspend it away from the intake tube or there won't be enough surface area and it will clog fast. Just think what it could look like if Rube Goldberg had had an Aquqrium and thats how some of my tanks look. They ain't pretty but their mine.:grinno:
