need HELP with my ornate bichir!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just leave it and dont worry too much, few of my laps have not eaten for 3 months, suddenly one day one of them ate till the whole tummy got stuffed, but the others are still fasting till this day.

haha.
youre absolutely right. :D
my ornate never comes out.
except during some feedings.
he'll eat just a bit, alot less than the other bichirs, then goes hiding again.
all my other bichirs eat like pigs. :D
especially my endlis.

earthworms might work, my senegal loves them. Sometimes bichirs dont seem very concerned with eating though, and my large one either eats when im not around or fasts, I wouldnt be to concerned.
Also if you are really concerned and think it might starve, you could move it to another tank that your sure wouldnt have as much competition for food.
Finally, the coloration of your ornate is might be different now then before, due to the color of substrate you have, compared to the color of the tank's it used to be in.

ours doesnt really hide he's always swimming around the tank. yeah we didnt think about the substrate till a little while ago. once we get our second tank finally cycled and set up we're gonna try black sand instead of white (tannish) to see how that works/looks. i think i'm gonna try the earth worms to see how that works. the next next bichir we get is probably gonna be a endlis.

I agree with trying earthworms, all my bichirs go crazy for them, and they're bigger and better than bloodworms (except for baby bichirs that are small enough for them, but I'd still try to give them earthworms).

Does it have a spot it can completely hide in, or at least a shaded area to hide under?

With that bright sand, it's probably just stressed, since ornates are very nocturnal unless you condition them out of that behavior. Even then, they should be kept on darker substrates to help them be calm and settled into the tank.

FWIW, it's very healthy and thick looking considering it's not eating. :)

yeah he does have have hiding spots for when he wants to hide. thats interesting we didnt know to keep them with darker substrate thanks for the info! i'm gonna try the earthworms on friday and see how they work and let ya know! thanks again
