Need help with new Fire Eel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try cut up shrimp into smaller pieces. I have to do that with mine sometimes as if too big it shakes its head holding the piece like a dog shaking its head til piece gets smaller and smaller it has to be so bright to grab the biggest for the other tankmates and ingore the smallest
I have done that, it attacks the shrimp pieces a few times but doesn’t eat it and ignores it then the fish charges in and eats the shrimp. ?

Its hard to say if it’s eating, it may be eating the food at night because it feels more comfortable doing this, I know it’s hard to tell especially if there are other fish there that would mop this food up at night, if it’s still alert and full looking it probably is eating. You might have to starve the tank for a few days and then try tempting it

how is the eel doing now ?
It’s still alive and active. It doesn’t look any skinnier. However, I still haven’t seen it eat. It almost three months. Can an eel not eat for three months or it must be eating what I dropped into the tank and I just don’t see it?

thanks

must be eating after 3 months or it would be looking skinny , all you can do is keep feeding a variety of meaty foods
best wishes keep us updated

Thank you, I will keep feeding variety and also after light out. This is the only fish I have had this much challenge feeding.

You aren’t alone, dealt with the same thing for a month or so with mine and my new baby Tigrinus is a pain in the *** to feed. Very frustrating to not have the reassurance everything’s alright

Just to let you know the eel is doing great. Comes to the top of the tank to eat from the feeding tong. He is eating giant night crawlers. I am feeding 4 per day. Is that enough?

Thanks

Mine act like the world is ending, one gets hangry if I dont feed them in a day. I would say 4 crawlers daily in ratio of its size is about it but have you tried other protein like raw defrosted shelled shrimp? Cut up fish?
