NEED HELP!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the main reason I was doing 50% water changes was because I thought that getting the majority of the bad water out was a good thing. Is dooing a 25% water change going to keep the fish ok like the 50% would?

ok, another thought (you should see the smoke in here), have you searched the tank and decorations for a dead fish, or old food? done a gravel vac recently?

now i get to tell a story that you probably don't wanna hear.. lol. when we started keeping fish here at my house, my hubby did most (read ALL here) of the tank maintenance. when he left i had no idea where he was at with the tank maintenance, didn't know that he was doing HUGE water changes on my 150 because he couldn't look under a decoration to find the rotting food that a pleco had stolen and stashed away. i nearly killed all of my fish when that tank crashed a couple days later because i didn't realize that he had left me a problem.

haha I actually just did a gravel vac today for the first time. There isn't any dead fish. I know what I put in there and they are still there! I have moved everything and vac'd under and all of the gravel. Im trying to diagnose my problem with the little knowledge I have and I figure if there was decaying food that might be a problem so I vac'd today and there wasn't a whole lot of crap that vac'd out really. I also move the little log I have and vac'd under it and all of the gravel. How often should the gravel be vac'd?

i probably don't gravel vac as often as i should.. but i manage to get in there and clean out the gravel 3 or 4 times a year (the arowanas more often though). i know lots of folks that do it every water change.

when i was running with gravel i'd vac as a water removal technique. Also i was referring to the 50% changes as a sign of commitment. Dont know what sort of size is best but id probsbly follow miguels advice.

I see a lot of information thrown at you at once.. It could become confusing. Can you explain to us what you're planning on doing so we can help you further?

Im trying to get rid of the ammonia problem I have. I dont have all of the parts I need yet for my big tank. Where I live is a big problem in aquiring anything let alone aquarium stuff. Soooo I have an ammonia issue that I need to take car of. I also what to learn all of the terminalodgy and tips and tricks of the hobby before I get deep into it. I want the best for my fish and dont know if Im going about it the wrong way.

how are things?

Ok so an update...its sunday morning at 8 olclock am. I dont know if its the fish gods telling me that this is a bad idea and keep fighting against me or I am just having bad luck right now.

I filled the big tank yesterday like you guys suggested I do. Once I got the tank about 3/4 full I went into town to grab some plumbing stuff and came back and there was water ALL over my kitchen floor. I almost had a heart attack when I came through the door. I found a leak in one of the corners of the tank. It looks like the silicone let go. The tank is BRAND new. Soooo I called the store I got the tank from and they felt bad but said that happens sometimes and for me to "throw" it in your vehicle and return it and get a new one. Well thats no problem except the store is about 3 hrs away and the worst snow storm of the year is happening right now. Also my girlfriend is working right now so "throwing" a 180 gallon tank on the trailer by yourself isn't all that easy. Sooo I guess Im going to load the tank this afternoon and head to the store in the morning. (thank god I own my own business and can take the time off! Its not the first time Ive had to miss work because of my fish!!)

I also have 2 aquaclear 110's and a rena filstar xp3 going on the 180. Do you guys think that will be good?

Sorry to hear about the leak, you seem very dedicated. I nearly had a hernia lifting my 180g onto the stand with an assistant! How are the fish in the 90 doing?
