NEED HELP!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks I feel Im very dedicated. I have wanted a fish tank for the past 10 years and the water in my last house was just no good so I figured it wasnt the right time. Now that Ive moved into the new house the water is a whole lot better and I have alot of drive to get the tank that Ive always wanted.

The fish in the 90 are doing ok. None of them look bad but the ammonia levels just keeps freaking me out. I should have that new tank home by tomorrow nite. Ill start filling it when I get home and probably put the fish in it on tuesday so hopefully that will make the difference. I was almost thinking that if the fish will be ok for the next week or so in the 90 I could properly cycle the 180. And then add a fish a day until they are all in there. Once I get all of the fish in the tank Im going to clean and start cycling the 90 properly as well. Just for a back up.

ok guys another little update. The new 180 wont be here until the 5th of janurary. Im starting to wonder now.

Can I make a make shift "pond" Out of a rubbermaid container and put a filter in there and start cycling the filter that way? I have been throwing alot of ideas around and I thought that idea might work. Once I get a filter properly cycled I could probably hang the filter on the 90 after and help the ammonia issue. Does this make sense?

YES!!!!!!! For the first time all tests are PERFECT!!!!! Im so happy right now I can barely tell. Ive been keeping up with the 50% water changes and doing tests and finally after 3 long weeks Ive solved the problem and everyone of my fish made it through!!!!

thanks!! Alittle question mabe you guys can help. My oskar in the last couple days has had little tiny white spots on it. I cant see them unless my lights are turned on. The almost look like tiny little air bubbles but I dont think they are. Have any of you ever seen this? He has also been sitting on the bottom alot with the catfish

Sounds like Ich..

Add some salt, and raise the temp.

Gratz on cycleing it sounds like.. keep a close watch on the water to make sure the cycle is complete though!

As far as the Oscar it sounds like 1 of 2 things.. Ick or Velvet. One is a parasitic disease and 1 is a bacterial infection. IDing the disease FIRST before treatment. Salt and temperature increase are a very common way to inhibit Ick as well as many ther illnesses. Ick is usually pencil-tip sized white spots/spheres. where Velvet tends to look more like white pepper grounds. For me personally the best way to discern the 2 is if the spots are also accompanied by a haze over the body. a film, That I can best describe as the slime coat slaughing off in worst case. ICK is strictly white spots with the exception of fins, which can show signs of distress. But Velvet, does look like speckled skin with a crushed velevet like haze over the skin.

Ick has a natural life cycle of approx 1 month or 30 days. So after treatment I personally will do a 2nd precautionary doze approx 30 days after to keep any escapes from comeing back.

Velvet ime can be a very aggressive disease that I've personally had great success useing Melafix in treatment. It is a very hard hitting anti-bacterial that should be used with care as all medications are. the key to this medication is to not remove any carbon ect and to NOT raise the temp. Which is a very different treatment then salt/temp increase used to treat ICK.

A nitrate increase is commonly associated with Velvet outbreaks and also not uncommon to ICK as many species seem to carry the parasites dorment or "inconspicuous" until the immune system has been compromised by poor water quality. Which you where faceing.

maintaining your water change regime along with proper diagnose and feeding quality foods to your fish can go a long way to your fishes quality of health and life. there are some good stickies in the Illnes forum if you haven't already looked at I would suggest reading for more info.

But disease/illness is not uncommon in your situation. You're in the homestreatch now to getting your tank on track don't give up.

What kind of filter do you have on it? some filters like the aqueon quietflow filters have blue cartridges that have a biological grid on them that help produce bacteria that will break down ammonia and nitrates. If you are clean these parts with tap water it will kill the bacteria and your ammonia and nitrate levels will increase and make your fish sick, make sure to clean them with tank water. If this isn't the case I would cut back on feeding.
