The tower is slightly submerged so that you have both components of your wet/dry plus it keeps everything together. The top of the tower is where you keep floss so that you can filter out alot of the crap before it goes over the balls. That is a kick ass set up should be pretty easy to keep clean with that much extra water volume.

Im going to start building a drip tray for the overflow part of the tank. So bascally the water flows over the overflow through filter pads, then through the drip tray, finally over the dry bio-balls. From there, it goes to the first chamber of teh sump which will be packed full of scrubbie pads. So basically all i have to do for maintenence besides water changes is replace the filter pad.
