Amazon leaf fish seems like an amazing fish, but I have seen it cannot be weaned off live food. How hard/expensive is it to maintain feeding this fish, and what is the overall care level it requires? Thanks to anyone who helps in advance.

I’m currently maintaining 3 Wallace’s shoehead catfish which are all about 6” and I’m buying 50 ghost shrimp a week which runs me $12. It definitely shouldn’t be more than that for you to maintain 1 leaf if you can get them around where I get them which is 10 for $2.19

Okay. Will these eat shrimp though? I have seen that they sometimes exclusively eat live fish.

I doubt they wouldn’t but I would wait until someone with experience with them chimes in.

Welcome aboard

I've always wanted Amazon Leaf fish and thought of breeding guppies by the hundreds first so I could have a steady supply of safe feeders. Never heard of anyone weaning them off live feeders.
Should I stay away from them if I don't have the resources to breed a ton of live food like this? And does this mean they won't accept shrimp or anything like that?

Suppose it may have been too much to hope this would be a solid, small, predatory fish I could have without having a giant tank...

If you want your Amazon Leaf fish to stay healthy yes have your own feeders to feed to them. Never seen a lfs with live feeders that were treated first for parasites and
bacterial infections. Ghost shrimp would be risky also imo.
