Need info on amazon leaf fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hopefully you didn’t take it the wrong way, I call lots of people here bud.

What do you think of this fish? Grows slowly and doesn’t require life food.
African butterfly fish are good too and would work in a 29, they are expensive at around $9-$15 each though
Not at all...

Those look pretty good, I'll look into those a bit more. Correct me if I'm wrong but is that the fish that's confused to be the african leaf fish or something like that?

I'm not 12. I have a job and money isn't much of a concern, especially anything under 20 like that...butterflies seem like a good option as of now...

I've personally had African Butterfly fish and caring for one is a lot simpler than the Amazon Leaf fish. They will accept non living foods but enjoys a live cricket now and then.
Awesome. This could be the way to go for me in that case then. Perhaps 2 of those would fit in a 29 along with something else that won't be eaten and stays mostly away from the surface?

I’ve had quite a few african butterfly fish and in my experiences it’s either 1 or a group, typically 6 is considered a group, as too few and they’ll fight each other and eventually whittle themselves down to 1.

Do you want a bottom dweller? I can look for one

So sticking with one would be a better idea?

And as for the leopard bush fish would that only be one as well?

I have a bristlnose pleco in the tank currently, so most likely he would stay in the tank and be the only bottom dweller.

Edit: I have a friend who has 3 butterflies together in a 30 gallon and has no issues with it whatsoever.

I’m not quite sure, as far as I know there’s 3 different fish that are commonly called leaf fish. The one I linked to is the most commonly found. The one you talked about is the 2nd most common.

In my experience I would say yes.

Yes, size wise it would be best to only have one as I’ve found them to be even worst than the butterfly fish when it comes to aggression amongst themselves when young and you’ll only find them at about 1.5”.
Me and dr exum dr exum have both have awful experiences trying to keep a group of them. I started with about 12 and am down to 3.

Wow. Definitely just a single if I went that. And for the butterfly as well. Somewhat disappointing as I was kinda hoping for something that wasn't totally a singular water pet but it'll have to do unless I find something smaller...

I have a few sites I browse for fish regularly so I’ll look for you bud.

I think they mean a single one of their own species. A lot of fish are more aggressive to fish of their own kind then to other species. So you could probably do a butterfly fish, the bush fish and a bottom dweller and that would be a pretty cool tank imo

Welcome to MFK! African leaf fish (Ctenopoma) get rather large, too big for a 29gallon imo. Butterfly fish are awesome and can definitely do a 29. If the tank is standard (30"x12"x18"high) then my oddball suggestion is a purple gudgeon, 5-6" or so is the general size this fish attains, If over a few years it gets seriously big you can also upgrade in a few years. Good luck!
