Hi,

Im looking for info from people who've owned this fish. What is Max size, what region of the tank does this fish swim? Any other info you could share would be appreciated.

The reason I am asking straight out is because I get conflicting opinions online. I really cant tell whats the truth and what isnt. So please share with me your knowledge. Thanks

they get around 6" ish. they swim all over the tank, not much for digging that ive noticed. generally safe with tough plants. a good calm cichlid that has good colouration if you need a smaller and generally calmer alternative to a GT.
the young ones are sometimes mixed up with GT juveniles but i still cant figure out why as they look nothing a like when young.
they can be bullies like most cichlids if given the chance to be dominant but for the most part they are very calm.
they eat pellets, flake, bloodworms, blackworm etc. unsure about insects but these will most likely be taken too as the blue acara is anything but fussy. algae wafers are taken without any training onto them.
all in all a very colourful, robust and generally good natured med sized cichlid. a good intro into cichlids IMO.

Cool man, yeah I was getting mixed answers. Some said 8 inch and some said 6 inch. But more were saying 8-9 inch. So I dont know. Then some said they swim all over the tank while others said middle-bottom. Are they intelligent? Do they get to know you and greet you and beg for food and all that?

yeah they seem intelligent. the one i had before recognised me and the one i have now knows me and begs for food and he also sits watching me alongside the uarus when i go to the freezer and he gets excited like the uaru when i pull their bloodworm tub out.
the reason i know he recognises me is he only reacts when im looking at or am near the tank/freezer and never the wife. he also sits in the corner facing the tv alongside the uaru in the morning when i put the news on before work and other times watching tv. its like they are watching tv but common sense tells me its doubtful.

Either that, or its the onset of madness on your part :)

Blue Acaras, generally very peaceful, get some super aggro individuals. I've seen them along the bottom to middle, but will happily feed from the surface.

As said above, a very good introduction cichlid, and some lovely colours.

Craggy

I've had one for almost 3 years and it is about 4" now. Very peaceful fish, although hold its own against other cichlids as long as they are of similar temperaments. Very easy to keep fish, doesn't dig much, and eats anything. I feed mostly floating food, but that is out of my preference not the fishes'

when they start talking to me then i know its time to commit myself to the funny farm.

firemouths and cons i would say yes but im unsure of JD's. i wouldnt do rams with them, rams are quite fragile in comparison.
i wouldnt put rams with any of the fish you have just mentioned, they arent tough enough to live amongst them IMO.

How do you tell if the fish is a Blue Acara and not a green terror? What are some things to look at to distinguish the 2? Like say, if you are looking at 2 juveniles?

Also what about the other Acaras? Like Port Acaras and yellow acara? Any info on them?
