if you're in the U.S. most petsmarts wil/canl have them for $5.99 or something around that price

Yeah, the closest petsmart from me is a good 20 min drive or so. I called and I got some kid on the phone and he kinda sounded unsure. I think he didnt even know what they were and still said they didnt have them. I am gonna check it out though.

Well, no success in getting a Blue Acara. I called a few petsmarts and a few petcos and they said no. Every person I asked said what? Whats that? Theyre idiots and dont even know if they have it or not and still say no. One girl asked if it was a fish. I said yeah, and she said what kind. I said its a cichlid, she says no we only have assorted cichlids, blue ones, yellow ones and a striped ones.

Well, I went to my close LFS and looked at their tanks and looked at the tank were they have GTs. It was hard to say if any were Acaras because almost all of them looked like the Blue Acara pic that was posted in this thread. They had black stripes, some were more darker than others but some looked faded. They all had the black stripe on their eye, but I figured these could be GTs that were angry/stressed, because I saw some liplocking and they were also crammed in a small tank with blood parrots too. So I then was trying to examine the mouth and head area and I couldnt really tell. I didnt wanna risk buying one and it being a GT. Examining the fish it was too close to tell for me.

can you get a photo of the ones at the shop. we should be able to tell you if they are GT's or acaras, as long as the photo isnt too blurry.

Well, do GTs have any bars on their body like the pic of the acara you provided? I been looking at some pics of Acaras and GTs, and some videos online. Im beginning to believe those GTs were actually all Blue Acaras, and mislabeled as GTs. I mean, I examined them pretty good. With the mouth and face structure it was hard to tell. But they did have the stripe on/below the eye, and they all had bars on their bodies. Some had the gold/orage trim on their dorsal and tail, some had more than others. Also, I cant recall the scales looking like GTs on the lower part of their body. There wasnt alot or any speckles like you see in GTs. I dont know its tough to call. But for sure they had a stripe on or below the eye and black bars on their bodies.

Do GTs ever have bars like these at all? All were in the 1 1/2 inch to 3 inch range in size.

the GT's at that size will have the same markings like the one in the pic that i posted unless it is really badly stressed, mildly stressed then the eye stripe and black spot is darker but the rest stays the same, shiney scales etc. if a GT is stressed in a lfs, loads of them crammed in a small tank, then it would probably look a dark grey colour all over the body and the shiney green scales will be less apparent and you would be unlikely to see the eye stripe by itself and the dark spot disappears too. the acaras however will keep the stripes constantly they just get bolder or lighter depending on mood. the dorsal fin usually always has the orange/white stripe on an acara but the tail fin may have just the slightest bit of orange/white visible on close inspection.
which one of my pics do they look like?

there is not much more i can tell you to tell them apart. if you still cant decide then you will have to post a pic up so we can help you.

I have one of each because of the same confusion
the 1st try @ buying a blue acara I wound up w/ a gold saum gt from pets mart they were mis labeled go figure
the 2nd time was from my lfs & was a true blue acara
I like both fish alot but it wasn't untill I owned both that I could tell the difference & they are nite & day they were purchased w/ in a few weeks of each other both were 1.5inches in june & now the gt is 6inches & the ba is 3inches their personalities are as different as their size & by the way they are not in the same tank
here are some pics maybe they will help

They look more like the Acara pic because of the stripes/bars on the bodies. When I tried to examine the other features, it was too close to say. The only difference is the black stripes/bars through the body.

Well, I went and bought one. When I released it in the tank I was worried my Jewel cichlid may do soemthing. The Jewel just followed it for a little bit, then just went back to its usual behavior. I can tell the new fish is a bit scared of the Jewel because it cowers and moves away from the Jewel anytime the jewel is comings its way. Its about an inch smaller than the jewel and less bulky too. Heres a few pics of it, is it a Blue Acara? Its fins are a little messed up but they'll heal. I did a 25% water change earlier today.

thats a gt. note the black spot and not stripes like an acara. also too much orange on the tail, its literally right on the edge and barely visible in an acara. also the shiney body scales, an acara doesnt have the shine on every scale like that. also note the flatness of the lower jaw. also no eye stripe running through the eye and onto the gill plate, its faded so not permanent like on the acara.
nice little guy, as long as the jewel leaves him alone he should grow up to be a fairly well balanced fish. ive noted that fish who are bullied when young and rise to the biggest fish in a tank often turn psycho.
what else is it in with?
