I just found out they my brother plans on getting oscars. He said he always wanted them which I never knew.
This will be his first fish and he will getting them as babys. I was woundering since they keep coming to me and I want to make sure they can handle them if ya'll could answer some questions.
First how fast do they grow and how fast would they out grow a tank (please let me know with different sizes)? What size tank would they need at the end and can they be mixed with different fish and if so what kind?
thanks
anyother info would also help

zzoscars can be bullys, untill the outher fish fights back that is. They grow very fast i bought a baby oscar ( he was the size of a dime maybe a lil bigger) 3 weeks later hes about 3" Oscars get around 12-16" so they will need a 75gallon for just one. They are also tank busters and will ram the glass some times. They will eat anything and poop alot. They are very messy so you will have to have a large bio filter. and frequent water changes is a must

The term tankbuster doesnt mean they ram the glass... it refers to a fish that grows too large for most home aquariums, like TSN's. :(

They are very fast growers, the two in my Avatar are now pushing 12in!!! If you want 1 Oscar a 75g is a minimum, 2-3 can fit in a 120g, but not much else. i would recommend at least a 100g or larger that way you can get 1 and maybe something else or another Oscar. PLUS you probably will want to triple the filtration at least. I have 2 AC 110s and a Rena XP4 on mine and still doing a water change once a week. But they have great personality and can be very entertaining to watch.

by the way where abouts in AR are you from?

I am from the Conway area. The oscar is not for me its for my brother and wife. I think an oscar is to much for me because I can not have that big of a tank. I want a 55 gallon and that is about all I can do. I just have to find a cheap one.

tell them to go with something else. oscars are very messy eaters. i think they would like a couple pbass alot more. show them some pics of pbass and see what they think.

He should figure on them growing like an inch a month. they are sooper poopers....

Not less that a 55g to start, and thats for one...
