Just found this guy at a crappy LFS for $15. I haggled him down to $10 and ran to the store and bought a rubbermaid to transport him in for another $5. Hes a solid 14" TL but hes really washed out from being at the store for a month. I've got him in a 55gallon right now and probably won't keep him since I don't have the room, I just couldn't leave a 14" fish with potential in a 10-20gallon LFS tank.

Heres some bad pictures until I get my girlfriends camera from her later tonight.

I just need a general I.D. so I can get some info on this guy. I'm worried about my pH being too high (its a steady 8) for this guy since I don't know what species he is. Also wondering if I should be worried about this guy jumping through the lids on my 55gallon.

One things for sure though, until I find him a better home, he will make one hell of a fry disposal :D

I can't help ID him for you but maybe try posting him in the Crenicichla forum. You will get an answer soon.

The PH you have him at might be a little high. I would slowly lower it to neutral. Again though, ask in the pike forum, there are lots of guys who are more educated with pikes than myself.

Coloration of fins, body (not counting midlateral stripe), and tail would lean me towards Crenicichla sp. "Venezuela" ... but it just might still be stressed and not showing full coloration yet. The midlateral line at that size says it's still stressed ... and that bar is thick, so it may yet be a johanna, just not colored up yet.

And you are right, pikes make great fry cullers.

Looks like a great big Johanna to me :) good find and save
