NEED QUICK HELP!!! ammonia spike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks guys. I am glad I caught this. I went to get a glass of water and the tank smelt so I tested the water and there was the spike. I am going to be doing daily w/c and slowly sucking the gravel out.

lesson learned :)

I hate being new at things, i have only had rays for a week...

problem solved :D I went to home depot and bought 6' of 1'' 1/2'' plastic hose ( huge hose) and sucked gravel out into a 40 gallon pail. it sucks lots of gravel out and lots of water. the water that came out with the gravel was brown. I am going to leave about a inch or less or gravel in there.

should have left the gravel... you just killed alot of BB.... all you need to do is syphon it... not remove it

Double dose on the prime and dont worry about the rays, they'll be fine.

when you do water changes you should be doing gravel vacs. cleaning the gravel is more important than the water itself

no they are both kinda equal... water replaces minerals etc... and gravel removes detritus

there is still tons of gravel. when i set the tank up 3 years ago it was for mbunas so i needed lots of sand. i wont take anymore out. for filters i have running

2 cascade 1000, one aquaclear 300, 2 aquaclear 150 and a aquaclear mini :D

I added some prime too.

add something along the lines of seachem stability.... and keep it on hand i have a strong feeling this wont be your last ammonia problem...
