Need some advice, is this a bad thing? Bubble in seam

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep, its a perfecto... What an ironic name lol

Yeah, I'm pretty mad right now.
Its not like a coffee maker that you can just pack up and return. I can't believe they dont have QA picking this stuff up, especially for something with half a ton of water that sits in your bloody home!
They make a big deal about having these things on a flat level surface in their little warranty card, but... yeah...

I am a little bent lol

I was very disappointed when the Big Al's stores around here all stopped pushing/selling Miracles brand tanks (an excellent canadian domestic brand for you non Canadian MFKer's) in favour of Perfecto ones. they are the cheapest ones out there. and cheapest for them to buy so that why they mainly sell them:(. but other than their 'deep dimensions' line of tanks, the build quality and quality control on some of these tanks is not that great.

I had to special order my All-glass (aka Aqueon) tank because they don't carry them, as they are more expensive (but much better built)

problem is, the average fish person doesn't care about build quality- they want the cheapest possible tank. if a well made 120g is $300, and other not so well made brand is $250, guess which one the average person buys?

it sucks. note I am not saying you were like this, it just sucks that the mentality at Big Al's is to make the cheapest made tanks the most available.

sorry for your bad luck. either way, something needs to be done because the ends of the tank are where the most support is needed (for glass tanks).

if the gap were in the middle of your stand, but the ends were well supported, you would be fine. however, it appears that the ends are floating, and the middle is supported which is a bad thing.

I would try and speak to the dry goods manager at the store where you bought the tank, explain the whole situation and see if they can help.

good luck

It is difficult to see if something is truely flat with a level. Level yes, flat no....

I wouldn't take it back because it appears out a tad, just put a sheet of 1/2" styro (the pink rigid foam building insulation) under it and be done with it. I put styro under all my tanks just in case of this.

Burt :)

but in this case, stryo won't help with the problem. all it will do is add a layer of styro without solving anything.

if the stand is flat but the tank bottom is bowed in the middle, the stryo will be compressed more in the middle than at the ends and the ends will still be floating without full support. its just now they are floating over a layer of styrofoam.

if the tank bottom is flat but the stand is not flat, the stryo will again, compress more in the middle and not at the ends. so you still have ends that are not fully supported.

either way, it doesn't help.

stryo is only useful if you have 'pressure points' like wood screws sticking up on your stand. then it will eliminate these from pressing against the tank bottom/perimeter.

it doesn't do anything to help fill gaps, leveling issues etc.

unfortunately, it gets presented as a fix to most tank/stand issues, and its not.

the other thing to keep in mind is that although hobbyists use stryofoam often, the tank manufacturers of 'floating bottom' type tanks (which Perfectos/Aqueon's etc are, since they have braced bottoms), do not recommend the use of stryo for this type of tank. they say it can cause an 'uneven edge' and lead to problems.

the best thing to do in this case is to properly identify which is not flat: the tank bottom or the stand, and then replace which ever is the problem. if it is the stand it can be fixed, if it is the tank, it probably needs to be replaced..

Well, I'll grab my dads level again and get a 4ft straight edge from work and see whats up. I'm almost 100% positive its the tank, because my last tank sat flush on it. And I did throw a big 4ft level across it and never noticed the level hanging up anywhere.

This is irritating.

Well I went in today, showed them pics and it sounds like I'm on my own.

They think its my stand, and say perfecto will blame my home made stand as well, I said my stands level. They say, well then shim the stand.

So... I guess that's what I will do.

I've been screwing around for a couple hours and its not working. I feel like I'm polishing a turd, but i have no choice.

Yeah, I've been putting back a beer for every attempt to fix this lol

I have had quite a few now haha. But I've made progress. I've shimmed the stand in such a way I've eliminated the gap some what.

Tank is level and 3/4 full, I'll let it sit for a while and play around again in a bit once things have settled a little.
