I have a 29 gallon tank thats been set up since May 2006. I havent had a problem with the water until recently. I have been doing water changes on it every 5-7 days, usually 8 gallons at a time. Usually my water tests at Ammo- 0 Nitrite- 0 Nitrate- 5-10. I just have a 2 inch Jack Dempsey in it and there have never been any other fish.

The last few days my Ammonia has been testing at .5ppm and today spiked to 4.0ppm. :nilly: My nitrite and nitrate are still the same. I added Ammo Lock and Seachem Stability today.

Is there anything else I should do?

Thank you for spending the time to read this :)

have you done anything with the filters? It sounds like you lost a bunch of biofiltration somehow.

I appreciate all of the quick replies, thank you!

rallysman- I have 2 HOB Filters, and I never change them at the same time. I Change them both about once a month, but about a week apart from each other.

Lil_Stinker- I use Prime Conditioner. Ive always had good results in the past with Prime. Is there something else I should be using?

FISH ROOM PLUS- I am guilty of changing the water and cleaning the filter at the same time, but since I have 2 HOB filters and they are cleaned at diffrent times I thought it would be ok. Was I wrong?

Bud_Man_Jr- When I do clean the filters, its done in a decorinated water in a 5 gallon bucket.

I just dont want to lose my fish, shes awesome. Here is a picture.

Should I continue to add Ammo Lock every 2 days like the bottle says? Should I keep putting in the Seachem Stability? (Today was the first day I put Stability in) I am really lost and have no clue what to do right now, Thanks again everyone :)

One important thing I left out... I usually feed 3 times a day, very small amounts, and all of the food is always eaten. Should I reduce feeding also, to only once per day?

Ammo-Loc can give false ammonia readings, and it prevents the ammonia from nitrifying. I wouldnt use it myself.. how long have you been using it? Why did you start?

I used Ammo Lock for the first time today, I started because I thought my ammonia levels were too high, and I was just trying to make the water safer while it was so high. Do you think I should just leave the tank alone? Not add any chemicals or do water changes until this takes its course?

Bud_Man_Jr- I messed up on that one. I didnt use old aquarium water, I will do that from now on tho..

Thank you both for the fast replies.
