Picked up a 150 (146) which is 72 X 24 X 19.5 making is a shallow but wide 150. Trying to come up with stocking Ideas. Any thoughts?

How about clown loaches along with barbs and danios?:D

Just curious because I see a lot of these threads. And I know Im going cause STATIC, but trust me its not the reason for this post. I was wondering before you go out and spend a few hundred dollars on a large tank shouldn't you have some idea what you going to stock in it or the reason you are buying it.

I see it like this, its different if you have an idea on what you want and would like advise on: how compatible with others, living requirments/needes, growth rates ....etc, but just to say I got a tank what do I put in it does not seem right.

Not to bark at anyone I'm no expert and I've over used this site to get me to the level I am at now. I started off with something I saw and I liked and went from there. All Im saying is have some idea what you want to try out. Don't leave it up to some-one else and later decided you cant care, provide or house something that someone suggested. Or maybe just this is not what I want.

Now I guess everyone will chew me out for my somewhat opinions.

Put what ever you want in there as it is your tank not our's !

But if you want my thoughts i would go with a very big school of Clown Loaches along with some smaller Tetras and Barbs , a nice large peice of wood and plants .

aros, large cichlids, large catfish?

I also thought about an aro. I think the only aro you can have is a silver aro. They are the only aros that are flexible enough to be able to turn with a 24 inch wide tank. Maybe you can put 1 silver aro, a couple of bichers, and maybe some discus. Discus look very nice with aros. The Doctor.

HAHAHAHA! would you like to make MORE assumptions? :ROFL:You see I bought a 55 with very clear ideas as to what I wanted. Next I had a 90 given to me along with 2 more 55's, a full grown Oscar, a 6 inch Silver Dollar and a 10" commonn pleco. I was looking for a 150 to house 2 Oscars before this happened and in the meantime a friend moved and I got his 100 with another full-grown Oscar and 15 or so Convict Cichlids. I tried to temporarily house the 2 Oscars together (in the 90) while setting up the 100 and it was a clear mistake. As soon as the 100 had water in it, in went the Oscar and Cons.

Next came a contractor over to do some work and along came the 150 (after I had decided I wouldn't need one after all)! I would imaginge I have less dollars invested in all my tanks collectively than you have in just 1 tank! Not being one to let a tank sit empty, I intend to fill the tank with fish (that's what I think they are used for) and since everyone has adjusted to their respective domains, I don't want to move them. I would rather fill it with something other than Oscars and Convicts. I have worked hard to gain the trust of the Oscars and now they eat from my hand and greet me as well. Hate to have to use 2 tanks when I could get by with one but they say otherwise.

I absolutely applaud you about the need to research BEFORE getting any fish and that is why I have asked for ideas. I also agree with buy tanks according to adult fish needs. This just happens to be one of those rare occasions where the tank pre-exists. I have the tank, you alredy know it's size. Now going from your ideas I can research and see if this is something I might like to fill it with.

Sorry to say - the arrowanna is out as is Pacu and Piranha. I was considering Fronts but I don't want to do another species tank as I already have 3 of them, unless there are compatible fish that would also add different colors. The tank will be unplanted and is too big to put neon tetras in without planting it. I would like it to be colorful and thats why I said with SD and Tinfoil it might be too much silver.

Sorry for the long post.

Thanks!

I recently put my 4 Discus with my 6" Eartheater (S.leucosticta) and six 2" Geophagus fry (sold as surinamensis but not sure) & 5 Glass Catfish in the 150 g tank (4x2x30" tall). I had a hunch it just might work and it's the most colorful active tank without being "spastic" like a tank with schooling fish. They all get along great and I've been real surprised and pleased with the result. I compromised on the temp and keep it at 82, the Discus spawn twice a week like they always did so I don't think they're stressed :-) So maybe think outside the box a little. I bet you can come up with a group that gives you color and activity both. That's a nice sized tank and you've got a lot of options. It's just begging for some Loaches I think lol
