Need something different in with Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Datts are cool fish and look nice but I think the OP is going for "color". So I am assuming brightly colored fish. Not sure if datts are quite there.

Maybe you could go with Frontosa?

I have rays, and Frontosa (not together)- but the frontosa are calm enough that I am sure you could get away with it, and they are pretty thick, so I think a ray eating one would be slim to none. They are very peaceful fish.

People will tell you that Frontosa need high PH, but I keep my Juveniles in 7.4, and their growth rate in amazing. The large ones have also been kept in 7ish ph as well with no issues.

All of the above are good options.. I have geo's, discus, and dats with mine. Don't see dats unless its feeding time though.

My smallest discus is about 5 inch. They get large enough that they should be fine with rays. I guess if you had a 24" ray then their might be an issue. Mine are wild caught green tefe (first pic) my brothers are all domestic which this is an old pic, he has many different kinds now (second pic)

geos and earth eater cichlids only temporary they will always get killed .

Ive never had an issue, I love mine.. They are a fish that gets better looking and more colorful everyday, however they grow sooooo slow! They are a bottom level fish normally, just sifting the sand and chasing each other around. Altifrons get very big. over 10"

I am experiencing the same problem as you... I want more color in my ray tank.. my black aro just isnt enough, and neither are my Geos (Theyre still 3.5 inch and under)... When I find a group of large discus for a good price I am going to give them a shot. Ill try maybe 5-6. But I want at least baseball sized.

Barbs, silver dollars, red hooks, etc are just too blahh for me.

to be honest I really want to add an FRT.

You both read my mind..
Fishdog I really like the "Heckel discus" I think they are.. the blue one in the bottom pic, and the albino orange looking one too! I want to get some!

xaznkewlguyx.. I see u have hystrix.. where are you located?? Very nice Tapajos Red heads by the way! i miss mine!

Can't believe no ones mentioned Dorado.

I can't keep squat with my big rays. My big girl just recently took out some 9" tinfoils. They had 750 gallons to stay away from her. She was just too crafty. Sad part is I honestly think she did it for fun.

You'll find as your rays grow that there really isn't much safe with them once they get big.

Choose carefully. ;)
