need stocking ideas for 125gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The temperatures and ph's don't matter a whole lot as long as you aren't mixing african cichlids in the 8 range with very soft acidic water fish such as some SA pikes.

If i were you i'd go with some german blue rams, golden rams, a couple angle fish and a nice school of cardinal tetras, which are basically like slightly larger neon tetras.

Plant the whole thing and throw in some other fish you like and you'd have a nice community tank that even mfk would respect!

seeing a 125G tank turned into a community tank makes me think omg what a waste! lol each to their own, if you wanted something cool i would suggest keeping discus but you would have to research alot ( giving the fact you didn't know a angel was a cichlid ) they need alot more care than most fresh water fish and may need to invest in an RO unit.

i really love rainbow fish ...you can have a nice big group and some are very colourful

I personally think it would be a cool idea, but keep in mind that Discus' tend to run expensive. Be sure to do plenty of research. Perhaps some Discus and a school of Giant Danios or some type of tetra.

Would shrimp be able to be kept with cichlids? I'd also like to keep a crawfish in the bigger tank but I dont know how to keep them from eating my plants. I have 2 in my smaller tank and they leveled all my plants in 2 days.

This is something like what I am planning on doing with the tank. I do want to have it heavily planted for sure.

The tank in the pic is not my tank. Its just a reference.

You cannot keep discus with boisterous fish such as danios. Discus are not adept at competing other fish for foods. These are mainly grazers.

Hrrm the temp and ph stats for those fish I got from liveaquaria.com I should of cross checked elsewhere aswell.

i like these loaches.
Vaillantella maassi
Pangio alternans
Botia kubotai
Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki
Sewellia lineolata

You can't mix the Vaillantella maaasi, Sewellia lineolata and Pangio alternans with the botiine loaches.

Vaillantella maaasi and Pangio alternans prefer still waters therefore any attempts to make powerful currents will not be appreciated by these fish. A planted tank is what you need for these fish. They appreciate plenty of hiding places. Danios and rasboras make fine tankmates with these.

Sewellia lineolata prefer powerful currents, cooler waters and high levels of oxygen so you cannot clearly keep these in a planted tank where CO2 injection must also be done. A river tank is a must for these. If you wish to keep plants, pick anubias, Java ferns and vallisneria. For more information, read Articles on Hillstream Loaches. Barbs, danios and rasboras provided they tolerate powerful currents should make excellent tankmates. Stick with species that grow no more than 3 inches though.

Botia kubotai and Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki are fine together. Both like powerful currents and high levels of oxygen as well. They cannot however be mixed with any species of hillstream loaches. Botiine loaches tend to outcompete hillstream loaches for foods, not to mention the temperature requirement is very wide in gap. Barbs, danios and rasboras make excellent tankmates.

What cichlids particularly do you have in mind? Plenty of cichlids love to eat shrimps especially when shrimps are in their molting stage. Crayfish will ambush your fish and eat them. These can also uproot your plants so do not expect the plants to last longer than expected.

If you are going to go with a heavily planted tank kribensis would be a great choice. They're really pretty fish (well, can be. I've seen a lot of plain ones lately in my search for a replacement female after mine died :( ), they're monogamous and can breed, and they mix well with just about anything.

Check out theplantedtank.net - there are a lot of heavily planted tanks there with excellent varieties of fish. You'll get an idea of what kinds of mixes won't eat your plants. I have clown loaches, kribensis, l. curviceps, rainbows, and a school of tetras and barbs in my planted tank and they all get along very well and are active and share the space well with the plants.

now when you say Bottine loaches which are you referring to?
Botia almorhae
Botia dario
Botia histrionica
Botia kubotai
Botia rostrata
Botia striata
Botia udomritthiruji
Chromobotia macracanthus
Sinibotia pulchra
Sinibotia robusta

Check this.

There are still plenty others such as the Syncrossus, Yasuhikotakia and Sinibotia but several are very aggressive. Need to research deeper before picking your choice of loach.

I've seen it done before, not just on MFK. But, since you're a beginner, I wouldn't try it.
