Need suggestions on a new wet pet

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My butti is a monster and the most personable fish I've ever had. Get him fired up and he will turn total black and white and go nuts accacking his reflection in the back glass for an hr. My gf makes a constant game out of leveling the gravel and every day he rearranges the tank to his liking. If you don't like how my tank looks I understand I don't either, but if I change it, I know I will wake up to the same mess

All Midas get big humps besides female but there not as interactive if you don't like the hump then go with a A. Labiatus or red devil don't get one from a store most likely a hybrid get one off rapps I got mine today they are amazing

you don't have to get a cichlid for it to be a wet pet, why does everoyne always push the cichlid angle? we are on the general chat not cichlid subforum so lets give him some general ideas.

Could go with a black piranha or "Rhom" they are amazing wet pets
There are some species of Knife fish and mormyrids that make good wet pets
Snake heads make really cool wet pets with a lot of attitude but you are probably American and can't get hold of them.
Larger freshwater puffer like a fahaka? if it needs a bigger tank it will be happy in yours for quite a while before it needs upgrading
Spiny eel of some kind (fire, tyretrack etc)
Rainbow wolffish

The list goes on and on, and all of the fish above have a better personality than a cichlid in my opinion. Cichlids will interract with their owners but only in an aggressive "get out of my territory" manner. I prefere a wet pet with a more complex personality and behaviours, thats why puffers make such cool solo fish. and I know it will grow too big for your tank but so far the best fish I have ever owned in terms of personality is my Giant Gourami. He constantly wants to know what I'm up to. he will eat just about anything, and plays with balls and other floating or sinking objects. It is true that they are very fast growers but when I got mine about 6 months ago he was around 6"-7". now he is 10" but he has grown considerably much wider, taller and beefier.

I would also love to have a lungfish as a wet pet but they tend to be hard to get hold of and most species don't tolerate tankmates that well.

ummm.......wait a minute. You ask why we suggest cichlids to someone in a general aquaria discussion yet you offer 1 fish that is illegal in every state, another 2 that can seriously injure the owner (yes, I have kept both fresh and saltwater puffers and have the scars to prove it) and 2 more that will outgrow most modest aquariums in record time. Im sorry, but there is nothing general about any of those fish. Most are escape artists and require specialized care in large aquariums.

Generally speaking, your list is mostly for the advanced aquarist. Cool fish for sure, but you really need to know what you're doing before keeping most of them.

Undulated Triggerfish is by far the most interactive and personable fish Ive ever owned, but I would not recommend it for the fish keeper looking for a wet-pet in general aquaria discussion.
