Need suggestions on a new wet pet

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't read too far into things guys...me posting in general aquaria has nothing to do with anything but the fact that this is where it will get the most coverage, and therefore more helpful suggestions. I would appreciate not tearing anyone down just because they gave their honest suggestions (whether relevant or not). I have seriously considered puffers. I'm not exactly what you would call a beginner fish keeper either. So please, just calm yourselves. I appreciate every suggestion.

ummm.......wait a minute. You ask why we suggest cichlids to someone in a general aquaria discussion yet you offer 1 fish that is illegal in every state, another 2 that can seriously injure the owner (yes, I have kept both fresh and saltwater puffers and have the scars to prove it) and 2 more that will outgrow most modest aquariums in record time. Im sorry, but there is nothing general about any of those fish. Most are escape artists and require specialized care in large aquariums.

Generally speaking, your list is mostly for the advanced aquarist. Cool fish for sure, but you really need to know what you're doing before keeping most of them.

Undulated Triggerfish is by far the most interactive and personable fish Ive ever owned, but I would not recommend it for the fish keeper looking for a wet-pet in general aquaria discussion.

These are all fish that I have kept at one point or another, and puffers are not specialist species at all in any way. I have a gar that could easily give me scars if I was dumb enough to let it get me. Everything you just posted is entirely your opinion. Which you are of course welcome to share, but Don't try and pass it off as fact.

If I wanted to get suggestions for a good wet pet I would want some variation instead of cichlids jesus. I have kept all kinds of cichlids over the years and I find they are so boring as wet pets. They do not have enough depth to their behaviour. It's either move gravel around or attack the owner through the glass. I was only trying to open the OP's eyes to some cool non cichlid species, Never once did I say that he should go and get them, they were suggestions.

and as for snakeheads being ilegal in every state would you be surprised to know that there are actually quite a lot of non US members on here, so don't go assuming we are.

I don't know man. I've never had problems trying to decide what fish I like. I HAVE had problems narrowing down the fish I want with the room I have. :) I would probably buy that Midas.

OP have you tried going on youtube and looking at other peoples wet pets?

Hows about a fahaka puffer? the only wet pet you will ever need!

Fahaka won't last in a 110G for life unfortunately... personally i wouldn't recommend anything below a 180G myself for a Fahaka, although most will say min. is a 125G for life...

If you don't mind smaller puffers, then one that i like to recommend is the South American Puffer (Colomesus asellus) they are possibly the most "friendly" puffer along with the MBU, but stay much much smaller, and actually prefer to be kept in groups of at least 3 or more...

The only problem is, they do require some dentistry every few months, as they are extremely prone to having over-grown teeth, and sadly even with a constant hard shell diet, have been known to still require some what regular dentistry... so if you don't mind a little bit of work, then you could maybe look into some of those?

ha sorry bout the spam posting :( was going to change my message then realized Im still getting used to navigating through this cite :P
