Yesterday I did about 70% water change and switched on the heater at about 82°F and in the morning I noticed that all five of my fish are upside down... I checked the water temperature and it seemed kinda hot than before but the oxygen from the power filter was on so I immediately added them in a bucket and added a bit salt and oxygen.. It really disheartens me to see them like that also I found one brownish floating worm :( Can anyone tell me what the problem is? How do I help them? One is floating on top trying to get straight and the others are still at the bottom upside down. I had fed them frozen dried blood worms for the first time and tried some Humpy head which they ate.

I guess four of my fish have died one guy at the top is struggling to survive.. Have added some salt and teramycin.. Feel real sad, had them since they were babies who did not even have proper teeth :( They were growing so well and beautiful were about 4" now.. I still don't understand the cause of death...

Just finished burying the four of them R.I.P One guy is still struggling.. Chances seem slim :'( Don't feel like getting other fish now

Hotter the temps the less oxygen in the water and with smaller tanks this gets worse. Seems to me you did a large wc with warmer water and it shocked them. Once I did a large wc on my tank with much colder water and they went into shock and stayed still basically floated but eventually they started wiggling when it warmed up....

Piranha are very hearty fish but no fish can survive high fluctuating temps with little o2. Also did you add dechlor? After every wc you should switch everything back on and keep them in the 78-80° range, run bubbles or use a spray bar for increased o2. And after this I would advise getting a heater controller and starting fresh! http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=21333 submersible heaters have crappy thermostats that can go faulty and stick on boiling your fish. This is a good fail safe.

So sad for your loss, could only look at one pic :(

Yeah I did add dechlor.. Guess you are right it must have been the lack of oxygen due to warm water that must have taken them. But I never added hot water during water change.. I got a cheap Chinese heater and I assume the cut off must have got spoilt and it must have choked them to death... Feel real guilty when fish die from human error :(
Hope that one guy makes it..

It happens man.... just get a heater controller to prevent future mishaps! Again sorry for your loss I know it sucks

This is why I love this forum. (Not cause your fish died that sucks dude) but because of the info I get. I never even heard of a heater controller but I always wonder about my heater and what would happen if. They malfunction. How rare is that? How exactly do the controllers work? Sorry for the hijack. Feel better about your fish bro. I know you wanna chill out for a while but don't quit the hobby because of one incident. A buddy of mines impeller went on his 200 gal while he was away. Lost ALL his fish besides the demoseys. He was devastated but he bounced back and has a thriving community once again.

The controllers have a temperature probe that goes into the tank that is wired to the controller. You plug your heater into the controller and the controller plugs into the wall. The controller has a internal thermostat that doesn't fail and you set the desired temp and it keeps it in check. Even if the heater stuck on the controller would kick it off when it exceeds the set temp. Plus you have a non stop lcd read out of your temp and their more energy efficient because submersible heaters constantly click on and off to hold the set temp but the controller lets it drop a degree below and takes it a degree above so if you set it to 78 it will heat to 79 turn off then click back on when it hits 77, keep in mind these temperature fluctuations take hours and are absolutely no harm or stress to your fish.

Submersible heaters are prone to fail eventually.

Controller is on bottom right corner
