i dont understand why people say dont mix them. i have owned 3 before and mixed all mine and never had a problem. as long as ur other fish are just as big u shouldnt have any trouble. i had mine in with a dorado who wooped on the wolf fish. i had 2 in with pbass and pike cichlid and they never did anything accept eat feeders at night.

sure you can mix them, if ya lucky not to get a psycho one. Also get it small with other fish so they grow together.

I have a 5 inch Regular Wolffish in with a large(8-9 inch)Oscar,a 12 inch Pacu, and 2 7 inch Red hook Silver dollars and assorted Catfish,i have had no problems for the last 5 monthes, once in awhile the Wolffish gets nipped up a bit though. My Wolf eats anything i feed him incliding Raw shrimp, beef heart, smelt and he has been known to down a Hot Dog or 2 in his time!!I love that fish!!!:naughty:

I have a Wolf thats around 18". I can't agree with some of the others on here. This is the most aggressive fish I have ever had. More so than my Rom (Black Piranha) I feed him live mice, and any cheap live fish I can get ahold of. He strikes the glass when unfamiliar people walk by and get to close. I guess I got ahold of a psycho one. LOL... I have not tried to house any other wolves with him. From my experience I would not recommend mixing anything with this beast. I have to be careful even cleaning the tank because he will come after me. Hoplias Mala is what I have.
Nice forum btw. My first post on here....

I don't own and have never owned any common wolves, because of there inactivity, but I've had a few golds and reds. I've always mixed them with each other, bichirs and gars without much problem aside from the golds chasing one another every now and then. The thing I like about the wolves is they eat anything I feed them. Pellets, frozen foods, worms, crickets, anything! Only my reds attack live foods with more ferocity than my wolves. I hate that I have to sell them.

I think most people have experience with relatively small wolves.. from what I have read it seems the wolves start to get the kill mentality when they surpass 12" or so. My wolf is only 5" and he killed all of his tankmates, but they were the same size. Of course a 5" wolf isn't going to take down a 12" Oscar.. when the wolf is 12"+ though I would not place it with any other fish.

i agree with mudfrog. Wolves start to grow their fangs at about 12".

From my own personal expearence.

You can keep a Rainbow or Hifin Erythrinus Erythrinus and Ery sp. Peru in a community with simalar sized fish.

With the larger Wolfs its a bit hit and miss.

The larger Mala's sometime works with large fish.

My Xingu Black at 12" started going for a 16" inch Snakehead.

I have seen Lacerdae with other large fish

Aimera is a no no with anything. It would probably take your hand off given the chance.

erythrinus erythrinus 8 inches
gold wolf 16 inches
commons 20 inches
lacerdaes 2 feet to 4 feet
aimara 4 feet

feeding-
generally, wolves will eat any meaty foods and ive gotten some onto pellets as well.

mixing-
erythrinus and gold wolves have no problem being mixed.
however, ery ery are extremely aggro towards each other.
malas can be kept with fish of the same size or larger.
when kept with each other,at least 3 or more together is best.
lacerdae, depends as some variants are non aggro while some will kill everything.
aimara will kill everything.
