I just need something reliable. Hence the question of whether or not a new one is really worth it.

Yes new cars are not always reliable sometimes they can go into a shop just as much as a used car. An example is if you buy a cpo car then you buy a car with like 5k-25k on it and get a 100k warranty as opposed to buying the new car getting the 5k or 5k-50k service plan.
