Needing help with my new 125g Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
HimSean-I am going to have to disagree with you on the water thing. Even though the filters may have helpful bacteria you are still running a risk by putting in completely new water-The fact being that the water takes time to run through the filter.

SpeshulEd-are you a teacher?
Could you post pics of the tank so I can get a better idea of what it looks like as far fish hanging on the top?

thats fine to disagree :D i just moved in december to a new apartment. i had my 2 AC110s and XP3 running on my 55g, all established. when i moved i completely drained the 55g of water and filled it with 100% new water at the new place. i also completely filled up my 125g with new water, i did use some substrate from a different tank though. i used prime when filling each tank. left the two AC110s on the 55g and the xp3 on the 125g with a new fx5 with media from the xp3. never had a spike of NH4, nitrites, or nitrates, all of my fish, mostly SA cichlids, made it with no problem.

substrate has some benificial bacteria but a large majority of your BB is going to come from your filters

The BB is on surfaces, not in the water. The filters holding most of it. The substrate and decor also having some on their surface. As long as a filter is kept wet in a move, you can use all new water. That is providing you are not dealing with "Old Tank Syndrome" in the first place, then the fresh water will likely kill the fish as they are not used to it.

I didn't do a water change yesterday, but just did one now. I bought an adapter to hook the hose up to the sink so I had to test it out. Other than the one time the hose came apart from the attachment and water spurted everywhere, it worked great. I can now do a water change in about 15 minutes - no more buckets, woohoo!

I added dechlorinator for the whole tank and all the fish seem to be doing great - granted its only been about 30 minutes. One thing I did notice, the little filter wasn't throwing out any real water flow - took off the last extension and all the holes were clogged but a few. Got that straightened out now too. I bet that will help.

When I say "hanging near the top" I mean...kind of swimming slowly in place, mouths gasping for air. I'll try to take some photos this weekend - gotta break out my good camera.

Also, nope, not a teacher. If that question is because of the nickname, my name is Ed, my friends in high school came up with the special part. It stuck, I think its kind of funny. I'm actually a sales rep for science diet pet food, but thats another story.

Again thanks for all your help, you guys are great. I'm really enjoying this message board.

Snoopy and HiImSean-I'm glad your fish didn't stress or die-but personally I wouldn't recommend that to someone.
Let's agree to disagree and leave it at that. I just want to help the OP and give him advice for the next time.

The fish are doing great right now. Swimming around like crazy and loving life. Hopefully things stay that way tomorrow. The 3 little guys were still in there and doing ok after thw ater change, but the albino oscar was getting beat up a lot. I actually just took him out of the tank and put him in the little community tank which seems to have made him 100% happier. Hopefully he won't eat anyone, but if he does, oh well. I just want to make him happy.

This site has been a big inspiration for me. I'm already looking at craigslist for more tanks. It'd be nice to have a few big tanks...maybe set them up as species tanks for some of my cichlids so none of them are overstocked.

Well, unfortunately they're back at it.

That's pretty much what they do, just hang at the top like that with minimal movement. Here's another one of the tank - sorry, not the best picture. I need to snap one at night so there's no reflections.

Here's a couple more, just for fun - the fish seem pretty photogenic.

And here's one of Oscar...its pretty obvious he was taking a beating in the big tank. Like I said, he's so much happier now. It didn't take him long to figure out he's the biggest fish in the tank now. He's chasing everyone around and was eating a ton when I fed him this morning. I'm sure he'll get better with time, I hope so anyway.
