Needing help with my new 125g Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gauge reads between 80-82. Seems like it should be ok.

Only the Parrot is at the top at the moment. The Midas and the big boys are all swimming around, but they were up top for most of the morningn - nope, spoke too soon, they're back up top. I fed them a small breakfast too - just some flakes, a couple of small pellets, and Snook got a freeze dried krill.

There almost seems to be a haze floating on the water though.

Should I maybe do another water change and add more dechlorinator? I also bought some Stability, should I put that in there as well? Can you add the two together?

is there much O2 getting in the water? it looks like the surface is pretty still. are they gulping for air at the surface or just chilling?

I would say gulping. Whats the best way to get oxygen into the water? Should I buy an air stone or something similar?

Right now its just the filters moving water. I have the holes in the piping aiming down and out, so the water gets sprayed into the middle of the tank. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Sorry, total noob here, I'm sure I'm getting a bit annoying.

Aimed the spray bars up...its been about an hour now and no more fish at the top. That seems to have helped, I guess I'll see what happens throughout the evening.

Thanks again for all your help, I'm pretty sure I owe you a few beers!

Well, things seem to be going great now, the fish are swimming around like crazy. Problem solved...and I'm an idiot, but thats ok.

Thanks!

HI, about the fish hanging out on the top of the water---maybe I can tell you of an experience I recently had. I had a 150 gal tank with a RES and 18 assorted goldfish along with a bunch of HOB filters. I got a great deal on 3 Cascade 1500 canister filters so I replaced the HOBs with the canisters. The next day all of my fish were at the top of the tank, rarely venturing into the lower depths. I did a couple of water changes with minimal effect. I went to Petsmark and met a lady who appeared very knowledgable about fish so I posed my problem to her. She seemed to know immediately what the problem was. She asked if my old filters had a waterfall effect which constantly broke the water (it did) and if the new filters also had this water-breaking effect.(it didn't) She said that the waterfall effect caused more water to come to the surface to pick up oxygen and that new filters did not provide this. Hence there wasn't enough oxygen in the water for the fish. She said to get an air stone or bubbler which would cause bubbles to rise to the top, breaking the water allowing more water to come into contact with oxygen, and give the fish more oxygen in their environment to breathe. I bought a cheap bubbler, set it up, and went to bed. Next morning everything was back to normal. Haven't had this problem since. Not sure if this is your problem but I thought I would mention it.

You might be overfeeding them-my son fed my fish one day and he fed them so much that they were at the top of the tank gasping for air.

Yeah, the problem has been solved. I had my spraybars aimed downward instead of across the top. They were submersed, so they weren't really making the water oxygenated like they're supposed to. It was my first time with spraybars and canister filters and since it came from craigslist, there were no instructions.

The lady also said it was a 125g, and its really a 120g, but thats not that big of a deal.

All is good now though, especially since I have added enough filtration for 400g's to it.
