Needing some HITH help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well one would think HITH is caused by hexamita or poor water conditions, so anything is possible ;)

unless genies cause bacterial infections now.

ph is 6.8-7.2. Haven't decided between Sulfa or Furan.

Little update. I caught him next to the side of the tank and was able to look deep into whatever this is; I'm talking millimeters away from him. One of them looks a bit like dust. It's very odd. It's a deep off white and it's not a pimple.

I'm thinking Tetra Fungus Guard since it has one of the furan ingredients in it, and dropping the metro since he's had so much anti parasitic already. I can't imagine it's still parasitic. That much meds could kill anything. It's a wonder he's still here and as lively as he is.

Maybe he had HITH, and got a secondary fungus or bacteria?

I feel like Dr. House... I want to give my medical license back.

Using metro+, decided against that. I ave a question. I have been giving him food with metro plus (hikari). should I also dose the water during this? do I dose daily with 25% WCs? the bottle says to do 25% WCs but not if you should dose daily or if to still dose with medicated food. any help will be appreciated

So little update: i did the metro food, and the holes have shrunk. one has left entirely. I think I've finally figured it out between your info, info from someone on another forum, and research. The metro food is helping the HITH, and he still has these tiny clearish pimples. That could be bacterial infection, probably caused by the HITH. I'm mostly still posting for your records if anyone ever has HITH problems and does a search.

I may give him soaked epsom as a precaution to see if he has anything to get rid of in terms of parasites so to speak. Right now he's getting Thera+A, NLS community, Hikari Carnivore with vitachem, Hikari carnivore soaked in metro (3x pellets), and Soilent Green (Repashy Gel food) for the veggies. All that is supplemented with mysis shrimp, SFBay's Medley, and an occasional omega one pellet/flake and zucchini/peas/fresh shrimp.

If anyone ever has a Syno with HITH, try algae since I read some info on PlanetCatfish that they need algae and lack of algae can cause HITH. Someone linked to a study done with another type of catfish, but I do not have it on hand. If anyone wants it I can link you to it. That is why I got the Soilent Green. Stuff stinks to high heaven but if it helps, it helps, smelly or not.

Further good news! The holes have continued shrinking with metro food, and apparently some of the white dots I noticed may not be an illness after all. As I said I'm only posting for your forum in case someone searches, and this will be the last post. I have found out what may be the little dots on all Synodontis and what they are for (seeing as I found an identical photo to the dots he has in a U shape and that is quite odd) - apparently, Synodontis can generate weak electric impulses; I don't know anything other than that but I have found various scientific papers regarding it. Give it a Google if you want to learn more. I don't know of any research regarding S. eupterus in particular so I don't know if this applies to Eupterus as well, but I know Synodontids in general are regarded as weakly electric so it may be involved.

Thanks for reading and following - I hope I've taught someone something!
