Ok heres the deal; i have a cycled 5 gallon aquarium i have setup which was going to be the home of a three inch arowana that im having delivered tomorrow. This home is temporary, im setting up a 125 gallon next monday and im going to let it cycle for a few weeks for this Arowana. Problem is the shipper called me about an hour ago called about an hour ago and told me he shipped me a 6 incher (yes i was pissed).. Anyways, what am i going to do about this? Could this silver survive at 6 inches in a 5 gallon aquarium (18 inches long, 8 inches wide) for three weeks?! I have no other home for him at the moment, the tank as i said is completley bare, with a hang on the back filter, strong air pump and stone, ph 7.0, temp, 78f.. Would i be better off putting him in a rubber maid container for the time being, but with that; how would i observe his health?

need some advice, beyond frustrated at this point...?

He just got here, he seems to be doing very well. Hes been in the aquarium for about 30 minutes now and is actively swimming around, chasing his reflection and "yawning".. Since this was the only body of water i already had cycled im debating keeping him in the 5 gallon for a week and then transferring him to a 30 gallon or so tub. I have the lights off and the curtains in the room closed to keep him from stressing too much, any tips or advice for the first few days?

this guy is a beauty, ill post pics later today!

Hmm.. poorly put together plan but since thats not helpful, I would say that he should be okay but Id reeaaaly rather have him in the tub. If and only if you have a decent cover for it that still lets air in. Until the tub cycles do a good amount of Water changes daily to bi daily with good clean treated water. try to feed minimally to decrease ammonia levels and check the parameters daily. Good Luck!

yeah you dont have to tell me that, but keep in mind it was supposed to be a three inch silver, not a six inch. a three incher would have no problem in a 5 gallon for the time being. it was an amazing price for a great looking fish that i wasnt about to pass tha up but i do admit im in the wrong and feel horrible about this guy being in such a small aquarium. Though he seems happy and active, it just doesnt feel right. So you think i should just monitor him in the tank for a week or so and let a 50 gallon or so tub cycle (i have loaded filter cartridges ). Also; what size water changes should i do and how often? I just want this little guy to be happy, but things took a wrong turn after he was shipped.. thanks in advance!

yeah I didn't mean to reprimand you man lol. I would do a 25 % daily water change and vacuum up the poop.. (if you have or can get a small aqueon type vacuum.) also watch to make sure he's not rubbing his chin on the side to much because that usually means he is stressed and thats also what the yawning means.... By the way what are you feeding him?

thanks man, and i know you didnt mean to.. i just feel horrible im usually the one frowning down on others for doing exactly what im doing now. I have a siphon tube, the setup is completely bare with the exception of several small stones on the bottom.. so for the next week or so ill siphon daily with %20 changes. Also he really just yawned twice about 5 mins out of the shipping bag and into the tank, right now hes swimming from one side to the other and ocassionally resting on the far right of the tanks surface. the water is filled one inch from the top and the outflow of the hang on the back filter pushes him down a few inches when he crosses the tank, should i add a bit more water to avoid this? im also wondering if i have too much water circulating in the tank. I have an air pump for a 30 gallon tank blowing a good amount of bubbles through the stone, the surface is a bit wavy.. but ive been told they need lots of oxyegen. Hes breathing slowly and does not seem this least bit stressed.. Ive never fed my fish until a few days after shipping, but there is a female betta (had a pair that spawned and im stocked with healthy fatty bettas) in the aquarium incase he gets hungry. but this will not be his staple, im going to try hikari arowana pellets in a few days..

ask a petstore if they can hold it for you
tell them your story

i dont have any stores around this area besides petsmart.. you dont think he be okay for a week, really? :(

Grab a seachem stability to boost your cycling period. I have always us that product when setting up a new tank and so far never had a problem. 24 hours after the first dose I do add livestock.

Why not just spend $15 for a 10 gallon tank or buy a cheap clear plastic container to keep him in. Just move the cycled filter into the new tank or container.
