We bought this fish a week ago or so and it looks exactly like a snakehead and the locals here in the philippines call it a dalag. From what we can find it is a neo chana not very easy to find. I got some pretty grainy pictures of it with my blackberry. Sorry it is the best i can do until maybe santa brings us a camera:) Is it indeed a neo chana?

btw it's an air breather and pretty aggressive. I had to take it out of the tank of the channa micropeltes because it wouldnt stop attacking it and the channa is about an inch or two larger and it's home turf.

...You sure about that?
The dorsal fin seems to be too long for a neochanna. (neochanna dorsals start below half the body length.

Looks like Channa to me. Need a clearer pic to ID it better.

nope I am not sure by any means, just the best I have found based on what they call it (dalag). I am actually hoping its some sort of snakehead. I will try to get some better pics of it

HI,

this is no Neochanna, these come from New Zealand. This is a Channa, amd when its called "dalag", I think it is maculata or striata. Both species are found on some phillipine isles.

There is a recent thread that shows a REAL Neochanna.
ANd By the way, Neochanna are NOT snakeheads, not even related to them. The only things in common are, both have a spine and both are fish ;-)

bruki thank you, I knew you would know what it was. It is in the philippines I got this fish so I was curious how it could be a fish from new zealand. I searched the local name "dalag" and all I could find was a very little info and the name neochana. So this is indeed a snakehead?! I am pleased with this info.

I searched both names you supplied and I am fairly confident it is the channa striata. Not bad for 2 dollars right ? I really thought it was a snakehead but they assured me it wasnt. When i got it home and watched and took a good look at it I was nearly certain it was a snakehead. My gf looked it up and told me it was a neochana and not a snakehead based on the local name for the fish. It is a food fish that people go gaga for here. We put it in with a micropeltes a little larger and the rubbed together and couldnt stay away from each other. Then fought violently and then did the rubbing game all over again. After locking jaws it was clear they werent going to get along. It is doing very well in another tank with 2 peacock bass, 1 rtc, and a tiger shovelnose catfish. How large do the striata get?

if it is water above 15 oC and not dead its definitely not a neochanna.
Neochanna is a really stupid name for mudfish they look a lot more like a stretched atlantic salmon than a snakedhead.
