Neon Tetra breeding log...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The fry from the first spawning really like the buffet I setup for them. They have infusoria, moina, microfex, ostracods and whatever else might be in there with them.

I gave the tank a thorough look and found 3 grindal worms still alive! They must be able to breath in the shallow water and may be eating the muck on the bottom. I have had an earthworm live under water for 2+ weeks before I removed it but this is a first for grindal worms. The earthworm also had the advantage of being able to move around pretty well...

They need to be 2-3 months old before they will be big enough and fully colored and thus ready for sale but like I said I dont have enough to be selling the way I want to be. More spawns are coming but I am giving the 5 adult females I have a rest to get back in spawning condition.

I fed the adult neons a clump of microfex to see how they would like it. I dont think they liked the way the worms clumped tightly in a ball but when a worm would stick its tail out they would bite it and then shake side to side and pull it out. After seeing them feed this way I put a bigger clump in a small container weighed down with gravel.

Didn't take long for the clump to move under the gravel mostly out of reach but IMO the only reason its not a wavy carpet of worms is because of the small amount of turbulence in the container and the near constant presence of a hunting neon. (the video shows the container right after putting it in the water not how it looks now)

No new spawns yet.

Yesterday afternoon I setup two containers with neon pairs and a plastic plant for "shelter". This morning I saw them both spawning an hour after turning on the light or at the very least they were showing spawning behaviour. I left them alone and went to a "garage sale" at a warehouse to look at an aquarium and bought it!

$45 and I get a glass tank that is bow front and prolly around 30-40 gallons, stand, glass hood and a strip light that uses a funny type of fluorescent bulb. Thats the good stuff I also got 3 boxes of stuff with it consisting of aquarium decorations, filtration equipment, hoses (not all aquarium hoses some are garden hoses) and even a hand saw! => Will know more soon but all in all I got a good buy at $45 even if I have to redo the seals as they look a bit rough. I am experimenting with a chemical that is rumored to break down silicone seals but wont know for sure if its working until tomorrow when my test silicone pieces have had a chance to soak in it. If this chemical doesn't work I may have to try acetone. I didn't want to use it because its far too corrosive for my liking not to mention flamable. Now to think about it I dont know if the chemical I am using now is flamable or not...

That said the neons are going to be left in the container undistured for the next 2 days as this will give the eggs time to hatch. The good news is that my web cam is here and I am experimenting with it. Might get some decent videos of neon spawning behaviour to post on youtube or at least I will be able to watch them without having to leave my computer!

Can add 2 canister filters, 1 master test kit, several individual test kits (none will be trusted however as everything is in pretty shabby condition), 18" fluorescent light strip, salinity test, marine dry fish food, lots of rocks, crushed coral in the tank, loads of shells, 2 heaters, timers, power strip, etc... If the stuff was all new the value would exceed everything I own for fish keeping combined =>
