Neon Tetra breeding log...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I looked in the containers and saw what IMO are a few developing eggs (but not many) =/. I'll check on the eggs again tomorrow and see what has hatched out.

3 days since the spawn and still no hatch *but* the eggs are still there and very small compared to previous spawns which to me is promising.

I'm going to put the count at 0 since none have hatched. I'll just keep trying to get a good spawn and post when/if something new happens.

interesting log keep us updated. BTW how did you make the infusia? I have neons and ghost shrimp etc the ghost shrimp are constantly having larvas. is it the desolved vegy, bacteria, protista, or rotifers that are the main food source for baby neons?

I culture microfex/deroworms (pick a name) along with daphnia using a few pellets of purina sinking catfish food everyday. I assume the cloudyness has plenty of infusoria and bacteria for the neons fry in it. A pure culture using some of the water from those tanks and a few pellets would get a teaming culture going fast.

??? So I check on my neon fry from the first spawn they are not growing too well IMO. They should have adult coloration =< In any case the **survivors** need a new home as I found what I believe are damselfly nymphs in the tank with them! They are nearly as big as the neons! Come to think of it I did notice a couple days ago that all the moina I put in the tank disappeared over 2 days... That was unusual as they had been in with the neons for over a week and reproducing.

Catching the fry is more fun than catching the adults! Catching/smashing the predacious insect will be easier and less stressful for the fish. I wonder how they got in the water??? I want to think they were a hitchhiker with the moina culture like the rattailed maggot was.

Try using a porous basket and put the parent in it and the eggs drop to the main tank instead of putting in a the parent in a plastic tub. i believe the babies will be more healthy. The ph should be low and temp must be constant in order to breed them.
