Neon Tetra breeding log...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My first breeding attempt was a success apparently but it was only luck that I found out. I was setting up 2 tanks for my neons and getting water from the tank I have at my desk to fill them when I decided to take another look for the neons. Tank had about an inch of water left when I picked up the anacharis and noticed 2 small fish about 1/4" inch long swimming out. My first neon spawn but have to say I am impressed by the growth rate!

Would give pics of what I am setting up for the 100 neons but I cant seem to upload the images. Its just 10 gallon tanks anyway nothing too spectacular. Been clearing a spot in the basement where I will have good access to water, drain and plenty of room for tanks.

I put a monitor in the tank hoping it will accurately show any ammonia present. I have not seperated them yet but soon! My grindal worm culture crashed and I was left with flake food and daphnia. They dont feed well and many of the daphnia are too large (they are magnas). I am going to wait and see how the new neons compare to the original 6 I started with after some fattening up.

In the pic is a wire rack with the 2 10 gallon tanks up and running. I have another wire rack setup next to this one and enough floor space for possibly 2 55 gallon tanks.

Cool Start up........But why Neon Tetras????????Is this your first time digging into the breeding adventures, why not try Angelfish.......ANgel fish are the "EASY-COMMON-ALWAYS-NEEDED-IN-STORE" fish that stores always have room for.......Neon Tetras are pretty much guppies that are mass produced in alot of ponds throughout the world...........Like the above snipet says, 1.5 million are delivered to the U.S. every month.........I am sure this number is way lower than the actual.......And I am sure this number does not sum up the number of small time pond nurseries that do breed this small schooling fish.........I am not putting down your thread........I too was excited about this same small fish long time ago...........I am pretty sure once you get read about the rest of this available fish presented on the forum, those 10g tanks will become full of some cichlid fry.......Here is a hint, Convict Cichlids..........If you have not already, try them..........

The 2 neons from the first spawning are doing well and something really amazing has happened! Not really... there are still 2 grindal worms alive on the bottom of the tank after all this time.

I have had 5 female neons in their own tank for a few days now and 1 is really big. I chose her and a male from the other 10 gallon tank for the container pictured below. The container is designed similar to my first attempt with a mesh bottom but its obviously much smaller and this time the female has been conditioned before being put into a spawning tank with the hope that I have gained a little control over when they will spawn... the hope is tomorrow they will spawn.

My main concern is that maybe the males I am choosing are not going to be old enough =/ Time will tell and now that I think about it I guess I should keep the known good spawners seperate from those that are not prooven yet. In need of a third 10 gallon for tetra housing =>
