Nes999's 1,000 gallon Plywood Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The answer to epoxy alone holding the seams is NO. Now, if you fiberglassed the entire inside then epoxied over that, then you'd be fine.

Large plywood builds are not designed to be moved. You're best bet is to build it stationary and disassemble it if you have to move. You can design it in such a way to be able to reuse the materials.

I've learned quite a bit building my 4300 gallon tank that can be applied to smaller tanks. BadOleRoss is a great resource for smaller plywood builds as well.

My question as always is WHY EPOXY?

Also John73738 as been a huge huge huge huge huge (and one more) huge Help. i would not be starting this weekend without him. if anyone has some time and hasnt read his build yet, you should go read it.

Well in all of my reasearch it had the least problems with silcone adhearing to it.

I offically have the best boss in the world. He let me going on the clock using a company vehical to pick up supplies. Tomarrow ill grab the rest of what i need. As for the bracing under the seams would CDX grade be fine or should i go with like BC. In other news i have all the plywood cut for the sump to be assembled tomarrow. i know the cart before the horse but i had the list of all the sizes and what not to buy the sump supplies. off to go charge the batteries for the camera. the sump should come out to AROUND 360 gallons 72'' l by 48'' w by 24'' tall.

I would not do CDX. Use a BC or other exterior grade ply. I would be afraid of the water getting to it.

Use bondo on the seams, and you can tape the seams when you epoxy it also.

What color SW are you using also?

Bear

I like the idea of doing a double seam with layers of playwood. Then you can buy the thiner sheets and make a layer as thick as you want.

well i lied i couldnt hold back so i predrilled all the holes for the bottom of the sump. i made a nice jig for my drill press. it took 8-10 min with the drill press to drill a 6 by 4 sheet every 2.5 inches. For the sump ill be useing 2inch deck screws since i had them anyway. As for the main tank ill be buying 2.5 inch deckscrews. pictures will be up tomarrow im just to tired to mess with putting up the pictures.

after calculating out the size of and "waste" for the big tank i should easily have big enough sheets to cover the bottom ill have like 3 pieces 4' by 5' and ill have the rest from another section.

im plan is to finsh the sump tomarrow and buy all the stuff for the big tank.

is a 44 gallon auto top off good? i never found a rule of thumb for ato's.

the sump is complete and huge im uploading a nunch of pictures right now. somewhere in the range of 40+pictures. im dead tired.... came into a small problem. im 99 percent sure i cant get 10foot long tank down the stairs. so if thats the case i might do a 8 by 4 by 4 or 8 by 5 by 4. just cross our fingers a 10 will fit....

i lost a bunch of pictures for some reason and they got out of order so bare with me and ill just caption as they come.

i would say this is the tool that made life easy. to try and cut alot of wood straigh with a normal circular saw would be next to impossible for me. best 1500 spent EVER.

the drill on the right cost 25dollars at harbor freight. a good drill but it could only be used to pre drill holes.

a laser miter saw made cutting 2 by 4's a breeze.
