Netting Big Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
honestly id/i do it by hand if there the size of like for example: sunfish..but i dont treat them like just fish i actually care a lot for my fish blah blah blah you know..but um if you dont want to do that then just use a wet t shirt or well a big net..

I recently moved 3 pacu that are 18" long twice. I used a plastic file bin for the first move, see below.

Same technique used for the 17" pleco, the oscar was trapped in a bucket as it wasn't big enough to need the file bin.

When it was time to move them back in, I wasn't sure I could lift the file box to teh height I needed to for putting the fish in their new tank. It was all I could do to lift them out of their old tank. For the second move, I used a big net. I regret it. Their noses, eyes and fins got badly beat up. They healed up really quick, but for a few days I had to look at their beat up faces and know that I had caused those injuries. It really bothered me.

If I'm just transporting from tank to tank I'll lower the water then go after the fish with one of my big nets.If I am going to move the fish from my home I get it while it is sleeping, after the lights have been off for a while. Then it goes into a holding/transport container.

when Ive had to move my big cats I lower the water level to the top of their dorsal then I use an old army issue laundry bag that I have from my time in the army then I just put the bag in the tank pond bin whatever and kinda push the fish into it works like a charm no busted fins or barbels Ive used the nets before and you just tear the poor fish up Ive also tried to wrap a towel around my big cat and all it got me was a fin through my finger ex freaking cruciating oh my god thats a lot of PAIN!!!!!:WHOA::cry:

whoa KDrun, did you move them into a pool!?

Yes. I upgraded my tank from a 210 to a 450. First I set up the pool (640 gallons) and moved the fish. Drained and removed the tank. Painted the livingroom, redid the floors, put new supports in the basement (1 more cross beam and a pole) and then put in the 450. Building teh stand and sumps for the 450 took a while, but when it was all done I moved the fish back in. They were in the pool about 8 weeks.

I've heard of some people using the big rubber maid containers and coaxing the fish in then putting the lid on and moving them... I've never done it personally.

And I've heard alittle bit of clove oil will help the process too.

Thats my method...worked for my pacu:popcorn:

Try getting a 27" GG in a plastic bag:ROFL:not gonna happen. First time i moved him was in a pillow case with some coaxing to get him in(worked great). The next time he remembered to pillow case and freaked out...I bought a catch n release salmon net made of material that lessens cuts/scratches and he still was still pretty messed after the move...Good luck and put on a rain coat...:D
