Never have Home Depot Cut Your Wood

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Moral of the lesson: Double check before you buy, don't wait until you get home and cry over spill milk. Nobody is forcing you to purchase a piece of wood that is off by 1mm.

1mm ha..

I wouldn't call lining up 8 boards, each one being completely different sizes split milk. I call it incompetence, the idgets would be fired if it were up to me.
You meant to tell me a multi-billion dollar company like Home Depot can't get some good blades, cutting machine, etc ?

I feel what your saying.. But the saws in the store are there more for a courtesy for customers whom dont own trucks to transport their purchase home not to cut projects out. The home depot and lowes here stopped cutting wood for free after 2 cuts .I can remember many times seeing people in there with mdf whom where building speaker boxes and wanted the workers to stop and cut a whole 4X8 sheet to what ever measurements they needed for free.

thats not carpentry, thats muppetry.if only cutting down to fit into cars, pieces should always be cut to a standard length 6/8foot ect out of 12/16 foot boards.at work if someone buys x pieces at 9ft and want them cut down to 4 1/2 ft we tell them they wont be exactly that because of the saw width BUT they will all be the same size, not 1 at 5ft 1 at 4ft,customer is allways right

alot of the problem is they never take the thickness of the saw into consideration,as a wood machinist by trade i know this is a common mistake we get it at work with trainee's all the time eg 6"/150mm ripped in half gives you 3"/75mm,NO if the saw is 2mm thick 1 piece will be 75mm the other 73mm.try to get into their head that if cutting timber for machining you have to balance it out eg 2 pieces at 74mm or 1 is under size

This. They screw up every single time. I just shake my head and leave the lumber right there next to the saw. Let them deal with it.

If they are incapable of cutting it correct but offer then it should be there problem. Thats like getting your tank resealed and it still leaks. Good call on leaving it for them to deal with. If you cant do something right, dont do it.

The same goes for Plexi and Glass at Lowes. I have gotten replacement panes of glass for Picture Frames, Windows, Tank Tops, and Big Screen TV Protectors. And every time their measurements are wrong, But for the most part I can make them work. My Last project that used 1/4" plexi I needed one piece square at one measurement and 4 Identical pieces for the sides of my Ferret enclosure. When I get home and slide the bottom piece in it won't fit. I take it out and it's not even square. The sides are all off by a half inch each. And then when I get back to the store they try to tell me I can't return it because they don't accept returns on Special Orders. (It wasn't special Order, It was off the rack) A minor issue once the store manager got to returns and realized I wasn't leaving without a refund. I now go to the Local Glass Shop.

I found the Lowes here to be worse than Home Depot. The Lowes employees didn't even respond to the call for service when I needed lumber cut, I ended up walking out and going to Home Depot. That has happened at Lowes more than once and with different things too. The Home Depot has been very careful in cutting lumber for me, and the lead cutter explained some stuff to me awhile back too. He said this specifically of their store, but it wouldn't surprise me if others are affected. He said the cutting machine worked great until it needed servicing about a year ago, they took the blade out and resharpened it, and when they put it back in, the lead cutter noticed it cut on an angle. He reported this but nothing was done, it was an acceptable fault of one millimeter per yard or so. Instead of leaving it he wedged a nail in the machine to level the boards now. With that being fixed he also noted the angle on the blade cut is not 90 degrees, it runs short at 88 or so now too. He tries to angle the board as it is cut to correct that but warned me I may need to sand it down to make it even, he also cut it a hair longer to make that possible. He's one of the few though that will try to make things right probably, many don't even know that machine well and I'm guessing don't get why it doesn't cut right either. He pointed to the sign above it too, says something like 'the cuts may not be perfect', an "out" clause for the company.

With my new miter saw it took me about a minute actually less and all my lumber was cut to measurement, easy peasy, too bad I can't cut plywood with it.

depend on what Home depot! the home depot near my house(1/4 miles) have some of the very experience workers in each department!
