Never owned a saltwater tank?

You don't need ro water if you are just using fish only and live rock, just keep your lights to a minimum. You need regular instant ocean salt, a hydrometer, redo the media in your filter. You can still use carbon, I use reef plus carbon and a polishing pad similar to fluval. Live rock is needed. It is very confusing at first but once you get the hang of the water changes you will see that it is quite simple to do fish only with live rock, and even simple soft corals and shrooms. Just read, the more the better. Any questions no matter how stupid...ASK! Reef central has some good beginning things also garf.com. Hydrometer is also a must to measure salinity. I mix a half cup of salt into a gallon of distilled walmart water for my water changes in my nano reef. I don't have an ro unit or skimmer, I am running an aquapod.

so what would be good? Clownfish and a goby?
Start off with a mollie to see if it stays alive and trade it in. Don't get a damsel because they are hard to catch and are too mean to keep in their. Better to have a 3 dollar fish die than a 20. You could do a pair of clowns, but research to be sure they don't get too big. I have a pair of perc in my 24, still waiting on a cool goby, but nothing has caught my eye. Stay away from manderain, because they are picky eaters I had one they look cool but eat all your pods and are just a pain.

They are hard to catch and aggressive in nano tanks. I never suggest them as the starter I ment the clowns being $20..but there are some damsels that are hundreds of dollars out there. The common run of the mill ones here range $6-$12 bucks, still more than losing a mollie. Expecially if your just starting out and not sure what you are doing.

Check craigslist.com look up your state and city you live in and see if you can find a good buy on a saltwater tank! You might find one with a lot of stuff you need and might be in the price range your going to spend turning your fresh water tank to saltwater.

ok people... after I finish setting up my 75g fw tank, I'm gonna start a saltwater tank. I'm not gonna use my 20g long, I think I'll use a ten gallon. It will be fowlr. What would some good species in this tank? People said mollies to start with, which I might do, but then I'll trade 'em in... what would be good permenant inhabitants for this tank? 10g fowlr

not much you can keep in a ten gallon. the smaller you go the more limited fish selection you will have and the less water to dilute so it can cause major problems in the tank if water parameters are not monitored closely. i wouldnt do any type of dragonette(scooter blenny, mandarin, or anything that picks pods as a main source of food) they will pick them all out in a short period of time and might not take to other food you feed. i seem to be one of the few who actually like damsels, i have them in my puffer tank as a filler and something else to look at, i have a few different types of damsels in there. also have never really had too much of a problem taking them out, but then again the only time i have ever taken them out was when i was taking everything out(livestock, decoration and all) so i was able to trap them without stuff all in the way

also the majority of pet stores keep mollies in freshwater, i have never seen one in saltwater in a store, so you will have to take at least a few hours to acclimate. not sure how long it actually takes, my puffers i acclimated from fresh to marine but that was over a couple month period so i didnt kill off all the freshwater beneficial bacteria at once without anything to replace it with

i say go big or go home
