never trust anyone again

I think the moral of the story is don't leave your fish in your grandmother's care. Its bad enough that they are in the latter stages of life and you expected her to do water changes every two days??? That's just asking too much of an older person. I think its still asking too much of a responsible and young person unless they are getting paid to do it.

I'm sorry but I don't think trust has anything to do with this. You should have known better.

I had a similar situation when my family and I went to Georgia for a couple of weeks. My cousin was taking care of my Koi and Catfish which I brought in for the winter. Well...I guess he didn't want to drive too much or too far and decided to throw in 3/4 of the fish food and left. Needless to say, the house stunk and 7 of the 10 Koi died and the Catfish were huffing and puffing.

Harsh leting you granny clean the tank tell her to pic up the dog poo also.

I was going to get someone else to do it. but she insisted that I have her do it. She lives 2 houses down. So its not like it was too far. my grandmother is a very active person so i didnt think twice.

but oh well its in the past. 17 rosy barbs survived. I know some of the baby rosy barbs didnt make it but that was to be expected anyway. no other fish died so i guess it isnt a total loss.

grandma was still alive that's something to be thankful for.:headbang2...
30 day vacation that's nice........I wouldn't ask or expect anyone to take care of my pets for thirty days..I would have made arrangements with an LFS or another fish keeper to keep them at their place....betta's and barbs are not that large, a little planning would have saved you this headache...

Longest I've been away is one week for work training. I relied on a co-worker who's also into the hobby. Needless to say things got done right.

Although I think it's a bit much to be asking or accepting a Gma's help for all that's involved. Makes you wonder why they didn't think something was not right with their process. The fact that you called and was told everything is "a ok" is a bit odd to me. I agree with you though, that even if she's totally sincere with everything. You won't be able to trust her to get things done correctly. Doesn't sound like she meant to do a bad job, just not a priority/something important like it would be to you.

I had my neighbor take care of my fish for two weeks while I went on vac. Came back and every thing was all good. :headbang2 I guess I was lucky.

looooolll thats funny stuff haha...

Before you leave, have your fish sitter actually do each of your tanks. Notice their obsevational skill on each tank, before they feed. You should observe their skill of lack of. Better to just let them scoop out the dead ones than to have a over feeding disaster...

not to be mean but how OLD is your grandmother? alot of ppl in their 70's and 80's have dementia.i wouldnt expect my 81 yr old grandma to take care of any living animal.. she cant even drive without rear ending someone .

im betting it was too much for her to handle, and in her mind she thought things were okay- did you offer to write it all down in big lettering? lol

i dont know if its really a matter of trusting her, or the fact that she's old and just cant remember to do it all, and to do it right..
