There is a logical reason why 20 filters is a bad idea: extending filter maintenance just leaves all the solid waste decaying longer adding to the nitrate level.

That's like going from one kitchen trashcan you take out every two days to having 20 trashcans and leaving them all in the kitchen for over a month. The kitchen going to smell worse starting on day three and stink on day 40!

If you read his response you would see that he is planning on cleaning them every 6-8wks.

That many filters won't get that nasty in that short amount of time. ;)

that doesn't make 20 filters a bad idea, the amount of waste is going to be the same weither it's in a sump, HOB, UGF whatever. the amount of waste in each filter however is going to be less because there are more filters. he doesn't exactly have a choice in how long his filters go without mainanence, remember he only goes to japan every 4 to 8weeks.

This is a vert beautiful tank and set up. I am glad that you shared it with us. I especially like the fact that this was a drem come true for you. Keep us posted. Great tank and Dream.

The number of canisters won't change the amount of poo created. Decaying fecal matter will add to both the nitrates and phosphates, as well as drop the pH.

but the poo will be distributed among more canister filters. lets say that 10 cups of poo are created(just a number used to make a point) then theoretically each canister will have 1/2 cup of poo in it while 10 canisters will have 1 cup each and 5 canisters will have 2 cups in each. the 1/2 cup of poo is going to affect performance of the canister less than 2 cups.

Didnt get a chance to read the entire thread...., BUT..., it seems as though you should have just drilled some wholes for a wet/dry.... I think it would have been more cost effective and versatile. Maybe the glass is tempered.... but if not that what i would have persued...,justmy2cents..... good luck..., by the way that tank is just begging for some rays........

I think the tank size and choice of filters was a great idea. There are countless ways that he could have filtered this tank. but this is the way HE chose. It is one method to filtering this tank that WILL work and do a great job without harming his fish. Im sure he put much thought into what he would purchase for the tank and im sure he was proud to post it(i would be). The tank and filters are already bought, so why not enjoy his post and stop HATING(to those who are).

Eheim pumps can power through way more than 10 cups for one pro 3, and not loose power. Trust me, I've done it. They are not affected dramatically by the building detritus, unlike most canisters. It is due to their powerful pumps. Regardless, the water parameters will be affected the same with 6 or 20 of those filters, as the same amount of waste will be produced.

^ Agreed ^

Water quality due to waste distrubution among filters will be the same no matter how many filters you have. Its in the water regardless...
