New 125 all male peacock and Hap tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Getting a 300 gallon! That is a fantasy tank for an African Cichlid community, or just about any aquarium fish community.
My Fusco is about 5.5" inches & is the dominate Hap in the tank.
I no longer have a Venustus, but the Fusco never really bothered it. Although fairly aggressive, the Fusco is no match for my Zebra Chilumba or Red Zebra.
You have a very good stock list. Keeping them together & healthy in a 125 might be a challenge, but is certainly doable. Especially in a temporary situation.
Be a good idea to start rock hunting at your local rockyard or landscape company. There is a lot of space to fill in a 300 gal. tank. Much cheaper & huge selection at a rockyard.
A 300 gal. tank with a good sized rock hardscape & plenty of open swimming area above, allows for a mixed community of Haps, Peacocks & select Mbuna. I really like my Haps & Peacocks, but the tank would be lacking without the Mbuna dashing between the cracks & crevaces of the rocks.
Just keep in touch with the forum, we'll try to help if any problems arise.
Really appreciate all the helps.

You should be fine about a year, if you keep up on your water changes. It's when the bigger of those fish start approaching the 10" mark is when that 125 is going to be crowded. I've looked at plywood tanks a lot and if your a decent woodworker its pretty doable and by far the cheapest, and you can customize it to fit whatever spot it's going.

Also I've had good luck cycling bigger tanks quickly. My biggest is 180gal and it took about 2 weeks. I threw in a bunch of nasty old filters which help a lot. I also use pot scrubbies as bio media which I personally think is the best media for the cost and seems to help speed up the cycle.

Thanks Ryang
I do 50% WC at least twice a week for all my tanks, I use Python and Safe for WC. Last two weeks I started buffing my tanks back to 8.2 with Epsom Salt and Baking Soda again and I noticed the fish are happier and flash a lot less. The other two Cichlid tanks are doing fine also. I used to used a lot of scrubbie back then with my older tanks but throw everything including rocks away when I thought I gave up on keeping fish after I had my leg injury. Here few years later, I am back to few tanks already and looks like getting more. Wish I was not so impulsive back then and could have save some much money instead buying everything again.

I got all 250 of my scrubbies at the dollar tree, they have packs of 4 and they seem to be the best quality for the price. Sometimes it's tough to find them. Its always fun getting those funny looks walking out with a shopping cart of scrubbies. I also got a mesh sack to keep them contained.
I know some people get them online through bulk suppliers but dollar tree just got them back in stock where I live. After searching through every dollar tree for weeks every time I see scrubbers I have a urge to grab a cart full.

That’s where I got mine back then and I still remember the funny look and also my wife thought I was crazy. LOL

Prazi wont bother the fish much. I would treat the whole tank now and if it works then you can just save to general cure for another day. If it dosnt then do a big water change and use general cure.
Sad day, my Mylochromis just died, 17 days from when I got it, never ate anything, dosed with Epsom salt, metro and Prazipro. Active until this morning, and all of sudden, went down hill very quickly and died. The whole time no one bully it.

I am dosing my entire tank with Metro and Epsom salt for 3 rounds and no feedingduring these 3rounds and hopefully my other fishes are not going to get it.

Is this the correct route? Really don’t want to lost any more fish. Right now the tank is very very peaceful. I watch my tank at least 5 - 6 hours per day and there is almost no chasing. No fish hiding and no damage fin but I think some fish has white poop, so I am afraid the bloat might have spread.

Thanks

One more question, I read that I should not feed during these 9 days during dosing Metro. Is that correct? Not even the medicate food?

thanks

Personally I've had 90% of my fish die within a month of receiving them, African tanks tend to be more crowded in stores and sometimes the stress of moving them allows any parasite in the system get ahold of them. There's not much you can do other than set up a proper QT tank once your new stock is healthy to let new fish run their course away from the herd.

I've had mixed expirince with treating whole tanks. I generally go 2 or 3 days without feeding then I try to feed pellets soaked in very diluted prazi. Many people have mixed opinions and its tough to know what works best. Try to keep the fish at as low stress as possible with only 4 or 5 hours of light per day.
I would do 3 days on one dose of mixed meds(general cure is just prazi and metro), then after 3 days dose again as the packet says. Then after 7 days do a large water change and monitor the fish closely for a few weeks.

In my experience parasites or bloat usually goes away within a week of medication. If it last longer its from stress and medication won't help until the issue is resolved.
Others may have some advice, the more voices the better.

Wow that is actually amazing to me ryang. I very rarely lose fish that I buy at LFS and even have better odds from online purchase.

Whoops I made a typo. If 90% of my ordered fish died I would be very broke. I'd say about 5% don't make it. I probably loose about 1 in every 20 juvenile fish during the QT period.

I meant 90% of my overall fish deaths occur on fish within a month of being recieved. Once they establish themselves in the tank they seem to thrive and not get to sick.
