I just bought a 125 gallon and need some help with the stocking of it. The fish im interested in are the Jaguar, Salvini, Jack Dempsey, Convicts, Tiger Oscar, firemouths, and Giant Danios for dithers/target fish.

Here's my idea:

1 Tiger Oscar
1 Jaguar
1 Female Salvini
1 Jack Dempsey
2 firemouths
4-6 Convicts
school of giant danios

Anyone see any problems? Suggestions? Other fish that might be a good addition?

Thanks - Jighead

your fire mouth will get eatin by your oscar or jaguar. your convict will have a war with your oscar, both of them ar highly territorial, and will eat any that fits in their mouths. i fed my tiger shovelnose catfish my fire mouth chiclid but my 12in peakcok ate the 4inch fire mouth at the time. i had 13inch female jaguar chiclid. they have smilair behavior. the rest of them are ok.

4-6 convicts is to much!!!!.How about!!!
1 oscar
1 JD
1 jag
1 firemouth
1-2 convicts or 1 convict and two firemouths.
But thats just me.

I had a 14in oscar with a 5in firemouth for many years and they got along good. The oscar will not eat it.The jag,I'm not sure.

They'd be fine if you had places for the firemouths and convicts to hide in, where they had enough room and had spaces where the oscars and jags couldn't get to them. You'd have to make the tank decorated enough to where the firemouth and cons could live in peace yet, be ready to run for their hiding space if needed to. And just raise them together as all babies.

I'd eliminate the jag as they tend to be to boisterous for the other inhabitants. I'd also take out the danios as the oscar or salvini will find a way to eat them.
That mix should be cool
Here's my idea:

1 Tiger Oscar
1 Jaguar (no)
1 Female Salvini
1 Jack Dempsey
2 firemouths
4-6 Convicts
school of giant danios (no)

It seems that we have conflicting answers. :D In case some are unaware of the dimensions of a 125 gallon it is a 6 foot tank.

The Tiger oscar I really like. Big, predatory, yet will allow some tankmates.

The Jaguar I also really like. If possible I would like it to stay on the list.

The Female Salvini I like because i think that it would add some color to the tank. It stays small and is less aggresive than the males. I dont see a problem with keeping it on the list.

The Jack Dempsey I also think would add a little color to the tank and is fairly large

The firemouths are something that I was unsure about and your answers helped me eradicate them from the list.

The convicts I like and on top of that I like the idea of a snack for some of the larger fish when they breed. Maybe I should keep the number of male convicts to 1 and have 3 female convicts. However, I like the idea of 2 pairs.

Anyone else have thoughts on the school of Giant danios? Should i substitute silver dollars in their place?

New List:

1 Tiger Oscar
1 Jaguar
1 Jack Dempsey
1 female salvini
4 convicts
giant danios or silver dollars

Thanks - Jighead

No other suggestions?

What order would you reccomend that I stock the fish? I figured the giant danios or silver dollars would go first, then the Jack Dempsey, then the oscar, then the salvini and convicts, and lastly the Jaguar.

I agree about not wanting to get rid of the jag. They're pretty cool. And also if you want a smaller cichlid take the cons over the FM because they have a better chance of defending themselves against the bigger(but not neccesarilly more aggressive)fish. Not sure what to say about your dither fish. You might try searching jaguars on this sight to see what other members are keeping with them as that is what will be your biggest trouble maker(or possibly the cons if they breed). Also good idea about adding them all when small. It probably wouldn't hurt to add the jag last.IMO

i like your idea of fish for the tank but i'll make a few suggestions.
_______________
1 oscar
1 jag
2 jack dempseys
1 male salvani
1 firemouth
1 male convict
