new 25 gallon.

I don't think so, but they are predatory. Apparently they don't do much until food is in the water. Neat looking fish though.

I'd set the tank up as a planted tank and get some small predators. The butterfly fish would be fine. Microctenopoma ansorgii is a neat fish, not too common though. Related to leopard ctenopoma (Ctenopoma acutirostre) but won't get too big.

ABF + = african butterfly fish, but I assume you figured that out.

African brown knives get too big, don't they?

get an AFB, some cory cats, a bushynose pleco, and a firemouth cichlid.

I would get the Butterfly fish, and some congo tetras

I would go with the african butterfly fish, and maybe a fancy pleco. Or if you want more action in the tank go with a school of larger cories.

If you wanted a less active predator tank you could get away with a ABF and an African Brown Knifefish - they will top out around 8-9". I'd only get one if it you were only going to put those two fish in there. The ABK might be too aggressive towards other fish in a small space like a 25g, but since the ABF stays on top, I don't see any problems with it.

The african butterfly fish gets really aggressive when you throw some feeders in there. I had mine in with my neons and community fish till I read what kind of carnage they can cause. For the most part they wont bother anything unless it gets near the top with them..

I can snap some pics of mine and also some pics of my African brown knife if you would like.
