Hey Reddevildon, see your interested in my favorite SW fish too. I too just started SW not long ago and read today about people culturing pods for mandarins in seperate containers with some success, and other people say to stack rock rubble in corners that the fish can't get into and adding tiny pieces of shrimp to get the pod populations up, might want to check that out. I am going to have to read further more though, to see how well these solutions work, as most sources say the problem isnt the size of the tank, but the amount of liverock needed to get enough pods.

what are some really good compatible fish for the 30? ive gave some ideas, but they are aggresive. but still no nemo tank, lol. i cant do a nemo tank, ill spontaneously combust if i do, there are way too many of them

can someone explain to me exactly what a protein skimmer does?
Pulls organic waste suspended in the water ("bio-load")
with the use of small air bubbles in a fast moveing vortex of water and air bubbles the bio load attetches to the air bubbles and is "lifted" to the cup for removal! PUT SIMPLY!!!

you ever blow bubbles into your milk as a kid, remember how it foams up? same concept..

good fish
(any) cardinalfish
grammas
many types of gobies; watchman, trimma, osceanops, clown, prawn etc
blennies; bicolor, grammistes, starry, flame tail etc
jawfish; blue spot, pearly, dusky, tiger etc
dwarf angels; pretty much anything but a potters, golden, bicolor, or rock beauty (think they are dwarfs)
basslets; chalk, tobbacco, swales, swissguard, assecors etc
firefish/dartfish; scissor tail, zebra, firefish, purple fire, blue gudgeon, etc
sharpnose puffer; tahitian, blue spot, pink spot, valentini
dwarf lion; fuzzy, zebra, fu manchu
dottybacks; diadema, flavivertex, springer, orchid, arabian, sankeyi, indigo, royal, magenta
the list could go on...

depending on type
2-3

of course there are the obvious gobies (watchman, cleaner, etc)
and then things like jawfish, firefish, dartfish, etc.. that should be concidered gobies when you stock the tank.. they live in pretty much the types of areas and all compete for the same living space, so limiting the number of these will prevent fights from breaking out

my aurora goby recently evicted my jawfish and he's only been in there for a few days and it's a 75 gallon!
they and the 2 bar gobies are the only ones that burrow and even then there are disputes

i too was jus like you. if you don't mind me sharing i recently setup a 10gal salt jus to get my feet wet about 2 months ago. first thing i said to myself is "i don't want a reef, seems like to much work and expensive". well, i did a hair more reading and after a few test purchases i came to realize when u have salt water u might as well try a reef. soon after i had my cpr bakpak skimmer, 2 power heads, 1 ac hob filter with media removed. 10lbs of live rock, 10lbs of livesand. buncha hermits and snails and a skunk cleaner shrimp. decor crab. 2 percula clowns. frogspawn. green star polyps. mushies. kenya trees. assorted zoa's and a good t5 lighting system. and i was on my way towards having my very own reef lol

i picked up tons of frags locally for 5bux here n there. its really not to much at all and is very fun to watch and enjoy. if you try just fish i'd go with all kinds of tangs that are compatable. setup ur 30 and plan for ur 220. im already leaning on converting my 150gal to a reef/ray tank with nice reef safe fish. it is fun walking around the other side of the fish store nowadays lol

have fun with ur tank, and post more pics as you go. keep us updated
