New 3500 gallon tank- trying to decide what fish...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what is the general temperature range of this tank, what are teh winter/summer temps in the lobby? is it a constant 70*? if so, some tropicals wont be happy at 70* and may get ich and die.

i say throw in about 2 dozen convicts and in a year you'll have 200 dozen convicts :) (im kidding by the way)

i think north american native fish would be an excellent choice, you could do sunfish, gar, pike's catfish, and bass, the tank is large enough to setup small habitat's for each.

this could potentially create problems w/ local wildlife officers. keeping natives out of season is usually illegal.

hmm..if there is a problem with the water turning green with algae maybe u can get some algae feeders? eg.sucker fish aka plecos to keep the water clear by eating the algae. i have like 5 large fully grown plecos in each of both my tanks with a sump filtration and it does wonders for my tank.(you cant put plecos with rays they will suck on the rays bodies and the rays will get stressed and die) i hardly have to change water, the most i change is once in 2 weeks. For the main fish u can get a single arowana or maybe 3-5 aros together if its big enough,as a single aro need at least a 6ftx2.5ftx2.5ft for it to grow to its full length. koi is a good idea but they produce lots of waste and maintenance is hard. up to u boss!

i just noticed ur in india, so if i was you my dream setup would be a big arowana community. I think it would look amazing with a pair of Silvers, Black, RTG, and maybee 2 Asian Arowanas. Then you could toss in some rays at the bottom and 1 or 2 orinos, monoc, ocell, temensis peacock bass. It would be a incredible show tank and the colors would be impressive. I don't know if it would go over your budget but that would be my dream route with that tank.
My 2nd option would be a giant community tank of cichlids or other common fish with bright colors for the kids.
My 3rd option would just be a Red tail catfish, Tiger shovelnose and a arapimagiga.

I have been told this tank was once upon a time a tidal pool saltwater setup but that was back in the 60's and 70's.
I guess Koi are cheap compared to the big saltwater fish I used to buy, and cheaper than a pair of good sized arowana and some rays! I don't have to start with a lot of big Koi- a bunch of smaller ones would be fine- they will grow pretty quickly in a 3500 gallon setup. The LFS has some really nice looking butterfly Koi about 6" long for $19.99.

I promise I will get pics on Monday.

Where's the pics you promised?

It's still Sunday:grinno:

You're in NW Indiana. Crystal Clear in Schererville is a bit pricey, but their customer service is excellent and they carry a large array of oddballs & larger fish, and can get in just about anything legal. Since you've multiple tanks I'm guessing you probably already know this, but I have to make sure. If you're going Koi, their stock is generally "prettier" than The Ark's as well.

koi would be easier than rays and be very nice with there colors and all .... but rays with some aros and a few gars would be awesome...
