New 3500 gallon tank- trying to decide what fish...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
up your budget and go saltwater reef.

I am here and I brought my camera. However looks like I have dead batteries so you guys have to wait until after lunch for the pics.

It is a pond- that is why I was thinking aros & rays. Once you see the pics you guys can give me better ideas on what would work well and not break the bank (right now I am figuring about $300 for fish in the initial purchase).

How should I cycle the pond? Never dealt with anything this big- with my tanks at home I always cheat and steal 15+ gallons from my 110 from an H2O change and cycle with some cheap goldfish. Not sure that would work with this tank (I would need a lot of goldfish!).

Don't do koi. No matter where you go, everyone that has a pond has koi. Same sh** different day. Arowana would be cool. So would rays, RTC's, Tiger shovelnose, paroon shark, pacu, giant gourami, etc. Your possibilities are endless almost. I'd also try to go with some kind of fish that has a great personality, and will greet people as they walk up to the pond. Oscars are usually pretty good for that, and cichlids would swarm people and create a real wow factor. I'd put a clown knife in there, just because they get so big and people think they're really neat. Some polypterus would be cool too if you could keep them in there with a border or something. If you don't want to go that way with the predatory fish, you could do a semi aggro community with angels and gouramis with tetras, guppies, some plecos, catfish, etc. Pics would help too :) What are the dimensions of this thing?

It is 15'8" X 15'8.75" X 28".

It is in an enclosed greenhouse inside our atrium. It is climate controlled to 78degrees inside the enclosure and the filtration system has a remote heater (that goes up to 140 degrees!)

Just do a fishless cycling...
Set the temperature of the water to the mid-80's
In de-clorinated water add
5 drops of pure ammonia per gallon daily
Take nitrite readings
when you get a measurable reading,
drop to 3 drops of ammonia per gallon,
continue this till your Ammonia and Nitrites read zero...
Do a large water change 50-75% with declorinated water
Adjusting the temp to the fish you are going to keep.
and your tank is cycled...
You can speed up the process by "seeding" with media from an established tank...

80 degrees is usually fine for any tropic temp fish. I would think 78 would be too warm for koi tho. With that footprint, anything I mentioned would work for life with the exception of maybe the pacu (correct me if I'm wrong pls) because of the height of the fish. Pics???????? :D

I haven't made it out to get batteries yet but I was able to get one pic on my camera before they died completely (date is wrong as it is the default on my digicam due to dead batteries).
